Mr. and 'Mrs. Joseph Handleman, who now divide their residential
year between Miami and Detroit, were honored on their 35th wedding
anniversary at a surprise dinner party at Northland Inn, last Saturday
night. The party was arranged by their daughter and son-in-law, Dr.
and Mrs. Robert (Joan) Sadoff, who came here from their home in
Huntington Valley, Pa., to make the arrangements. They were assisted
by the Handlemans' other daughters, Joyce and Linda, and by Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Abrams. Among the guests were Mrs. Handleman's cousins.
Dr. and Mrs. Leonard (Charlotte) Stark, of Cincinnati. Max Sosin
was master of ceremonies at a specially-arranged program that marked
the evening, and Mr. Handleman recalled early Detroit experiences in
his response to the greetings. Among the honors extended the Handle-
mans was the inscription of their names and the occasion of their 35th
anniversary in the Golden Book of the Jewish National Fund in
Jerusalem.
A total of 25 Detroit members of Pioneer Women will attend the
National Pioneer Women Convention Sept. 12-15 in St. Louis. They
include Mesdames Gerald E. Goldberg, Celia Altman, Sol Hoberman,
Paul Huppert, Harry Janower, Martin Kaber, Morris Kimmel. Norman
Leemon, Michael Michlin, Halph Miller, Joel Pasikov, Victor Ross
Sarah Rubin, Jacob Schreier, H. Stollman, Sam Wasserman, Milton
Weiss, Cam Yagoda, Morton Barnett, Herman Kanter, Irving Lelgant,
Sarah Levin, Bettty A. Block, Harry Mondry and Nathan Silverman.
A number of Detroiters attended the recent wedding of Jack Neal
Alpern of East Liverpool. 0., son of former Detroiter Lilyan (Shapiro)
and Dr. Michael Alpern. to Joanne Brodell, daughter of the Lawrence
Brodells of Greensburg, Pa. At the ceremony in Export, Pa.. were
the bridegroom's grandmother Mrs. Paul Shapiro, Dr. and Mrs. Mar-
vin B. Levy, and Messrs and Mesdames Ben Feinstein, Charles Kief,
Ronald N. Kief, Jeffrey N. Cole, Wilford Cole, and Harold Weiss. The
newlyweds will reside in Columbus.
Rabbi Sherwin Wine of the Birmingham Temple returned last
week from a three-week tour of Morocco, Romania, Egypt, Lebanon
and Syria. Traveling as a "Jewish teacher," he was able to visit the
anti-Israel centers and to make a study of conditions there.
Lee J. Cobb, the eminent actor, was a guest here from Hollywood
at a cultural meeting of the Zionist Organization of Detroit last week.
Dr. Werner Montag, consul general of the Federal Republic of Ger-
many, and a group of Christian Bible students also were guests at the
meeting.
Rabbi Leon Fram will be in St. Louis over Labor Day to attend the
second birthday party of his twin godsons, Michael and Howard Kaplan,
children of his grandniece, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Kaplan.
Shapiro Family Club held its annual picnic at Oak Park Municipal
Park recently. Chairman was Ben Schurgin.
