24 Congregations Will Hear Bond Appeals

Twenty-four Detroit area congre-
gations will participate in the Is-
rael Bond High Holy Day appeals
on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur,
It was announced by Phillip Stoll-
man, chairman of the Detroit Con-
gregational and High Holy Day
Council.
Nationally prominent speakers
will make the Bond appeals. They
include Ira Feinberg, specialist in
Middle Eastern affairs; Riabert
Lurie, television and radio writer
and producer; and Lewis Norman,
director, producer and journalist.
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal will make

TEMPLE BETH JACOB: Services 8:30 p.m. today. Rabbi Berkowitz
will speak on "Return to What?"
TEMPLE KOL AMI: Services 8:30 p.m. today. Rabbi Conrad's sermon
will be "Not Forever Does He Retain His Anger."

Regular services will be held at Cong. Bnai David; Cong. Beth
Moses; Cong. Shaarey Zedek, Birmingham Temple, Cong. Mishkan
Israel, Temple Emanu-El, Cong. Beth Shalom, Cong. Beth Achim,
Young Israel of Oak-Woods, Cong. Beth Hillel, Livonia Jewish Con-
gregation, Cong. Bnai Israel, Young Israel of Greenfield and Down-
town Synagogue.

Sephardic Community Holds Services

Rabbi Samuel Betsalel, a young
Israeli rabbi, is conducting tradi-
tional Sephardic High Holy Day
services at the sanctuary in the
Zionist Cultural Center, Southfield.
He will be assisted by David
Hazan and Salvatore Katan. The
shofar will be sounded by Law-
' rence Gormezano.
At a recent meeting of the
Sephardic Community of Greater
Detroit, the following officers were
elected for the next two-year
period:
President, David Chicorel; vice
presidents, Jacob Gormezano and
Salvatore Katan; treasurer, David
Romano; and secretaries, Susan
Betsalel and Mary Papo.
Chairmen are: membership,
Jack Gormezano and Salvatore

tan; good and welfare, Signora
Polinsky; hospitality, Rose . Quen;
and hostess, Lillian Katan.
The 52-year-old Sephardic orga-
nization meets for religious, cul-
tural and social purposes. Its first
members were from Smyrna, Tur-
key, but the community grew after
World War II with many new
arrivals from Greece and Italy.
In more recent years, families
have come from Cuba, Argentina,
Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Turkey,
Israel, Syria, Iraq and Iran.
Membership is open to all in-
terested persons in the commu-
