Bernstein's Party for Panthers Hit

Editor, The Jewish News:
I read your Purely Commentary
of this week's (Sept. 4) Jewish
News and when I came across the
part where you talk about the
Black Panthers, I was thinking of
our "great" man, Leonard Bern-
stein, who gave a tremendous
party in his home for the Black
Panthers at which many thousands
of dollars were solicited for their
cause that includes anti-Semitism

TIE DETROIT JEWISH PEWS

An effort is under way to organ-
ize a Michigan Chapter of the
American Committee for Rescue
and Resettlement of Iraqi Jews,
Inc., a New York-based group that
seeks to find ways for the Jews of
Iraq to win their freedom.
The organizing meeting will be
held 8 p.m. Sunday at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Allen Vinocur, 20945
Andover, Southfield. For informa-
tion, call Mrs. Vinocur, 354-2293.
AMCORR, whose honorary
chairman is Sen. Jacob Javits,
was founded in March 1969 as a
result of the widely publicized
hangings in Iraq; in which a
number of Jews were executed
as Israeli "spies."
The organization describes its
objectives as helping protect Iraqi
Jews and preventing further
executions and detentions; secur-
ing and faciliating their emigra-
tion from Iraq; providing for their
resettlement in other lands and
helping underwrite the cost; and
providing much needed help and
relief, financial and otherwise,
until they are permitted to leave
Iraq.
AMCORR hopes to utilize public
opinion, diplomatic efforts and
private contacts to achieve its ends.

It is a well-known fact that I
am a very progressive person,
realizing the rights of all peoples,
but I cannot tolerate anti-Semitism.
I am not as big and famous a
person as Leonard Bernstein, but
in my eyes his catering to the
Black Panthers made him very
small indeed! In order to display

many Jews?

Editor, The Jewish News:
Supposing that as a result of a
devastating plague which may
come on the Soviets, and that may
well yet be, to the urgent demand
"Let my people go," the powers
there will at last say, "Rise up,
and get you forth from among my
people, both ye and the children
of Israel . . . and be gone."
Obviously, there could be only
one place for them to march and
that is the Promised Land. Ob-
viously also, the government of Is-
rael would go beyond its strength
to accommodate so vast an immi-
gration; but they would meet the
situation heroically as they have
every situation since the establish-
ment of the state.
The problem that would, how-
ever, present itself is what would
American Jewry do then? A very
superificial calculation will show r.
that settle 3,000,000 uvehen yirbu,
Soviet Jews, on the basis of
about $1,500 per person, would
take $4-5,000,000,000.
This is not an impossible sum
for American Jewry to raise. Fig-
uring the annual national income
of the American people, and that
our share is in proportion, this
would mean one-half of the income
of the Jewish people in this coun-
try for one year.
Talk about "we will not forget
you," are we willing to underwrite
this? Do we put our money where,
etc.?
