JERUSALEM (JTA)—Dr. Amos
de Shalit, former head of the nu-
clear physics department at the
Weizmann Institute of Science in
Rehovot, died here at age 46 after
a brief illness.
Prof. de Shalit was born in Jeru-
salem and was educated at the He-
brew University and in Zurich. He
engaged in research at Princeton
University in 1952, was a visiting
professor at the Massachusetts In-
stitute of Technology in 1961 and
scientific director at the Weizmann
Institute from 1961-63. He headed
the institute's nuclear physics de-
partment from 1954-64. He was a
winner of the Israel Prize in 1965.
In New York, Meir W. Weisgal,
president of the institute, called
Prof. de Shalit's death "an irre-
parable loss" to the institute and to
the state of Israel. Before leaving
to attend the funeral services to
be held Thursday in Rehovot,
Weisgal described Prof. de Shalit
as "a scientist of the highest dis-
tinction whose talents encompassed
many fields."
