JERUSALEM (JTA)—Dr. Amos de Shalit, former head of the nu- clear physics department at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, died here at age 46 after a brief illness. Prof. de Shalit was born in Jeru- salem and was educated at the He- brew University and in Zurich. He engaged in research at Princeton University in 1952, was a visiting professor at the Massachusetts In- stitute of Technology in 1961 and scientific director at the Weizmann Institute from 1961-63. He headed the institute's nuclear physics de- partment from 1954-64. He was a winner of the Israel Prize in 1965. In New York, Meir W. Weisgal, president of the institute, called Prof. de Shalit's death "an irre- parable loss" to the institute and to the state of Israel. Before leaving to attend the funeral services to be held Thursday in Rehovot, Weisgal described Prof. de Shalit as "a scientist of the highest dis- tinction whose talents encompassed many fields." l ELIA LOUIS LIPSHITZ, 19100 W.
