Maurice Samuel Bids Farewell to Detroit
in Speech Praising Israel, American Jewry

By PAUL MASSERMAN
Maurice Samuel, who made his
first visit to Detroit 45 years ago,
made his farewell speech here last
week when he was guest speaker
at the Cong. Beth Abraham din-
ner, which honored Rabbi Israel I.
Halpern for his 20 years as spiri-
tual leader of the congregation.
Samuel said:
"A word of gratitude to tell you
how profoundly I have been arous-
ed by American Jewry. I have re-
ceived from you the courage that
has enabled me to carry on for
more than half a century. I say
farewell with the knowledge that
you will carry on with increasing
devotion and hand on to your chil-
dren and grandchildren the torch
which you have
so valiantly car-
ried."
Samuel, very
frail, had to sit
when he made
his speech. He
has been forbid-
den by his doc-
tors to go on lec-
ture tours and
will now confine
his appearance s
to New York City. '
Samuel recal I e d
that he has been
a Zionist for 60
Samuel
years and that he
had made his first visit to Pales-
tine in 1924. He elaborated:
"These were critical times
through which I have passed and
in which I have participated.
Sixty years ago Zionists were a
joke. Contrast it with the present
when the state of Israel has be-
come a symbol throughout the
world for all peoples who are
struggling for freedom and dig-
nity. To judge Israel's stature,
look at its enemies. We have
never been hated by an advanc-
ed or civilized people. We are
hated by the hyenas of the
right and by the maniacs of the
left. It is an honor to be hated

by the Communists and it was

an honor to be hated by the

Fas-

cists."

Samuel quoted from an article
in the New York Times by a
world-famous journalist, comment-
ing on the fate of Czechoslovakia,
which had been invaded by the
Nazis in 1938 and by the Russians
in 1968, without putting up a fight,
and contrasting it with the be-
havior of Israel.
"It is my hunch," said Samuel,
"that had the Czechs made it clear
that they would have fought with
their fists, there would have been
no invasion."
"Now we understand why Russia
is so bitter. It was Israel which
had the audacity to say 'We shall
not be destroyed.' Even the Com-
munists had a feeling of shame
after the Six-Day War. Because we
set this example, we are hated by
the people we do not want as
friends.
"The ordinary people all over
the world cheered when Israel
stood up with infinite courage
against infinite danger. But this
didn't last long. Now there is a lot
of double talk. There is a feeling
that Jews have no right to fight
with such dazzling success. We
live through periods of approval
and periods of disapproval. But
even at the height of Israel's dan-
ger, we received no word of en-
couragement from the organized
churches or from governments—
only the people were with us.
There is something which be-
grudges the Jews their achieve-
ments or their homeland."
Samuel went on to say that
"Public opinion is shifting in our
direction. There is no longer
talk of giving up the Golan
Heights or dividing Jerusalem—
because we have convinced them
with our courage.
"To give up in victory what we
wouldn't give up in defeat is be-
yond comprehension. We proclaim
to the world: "There will never be
a second Auschwitz or Buchen-

Israel to Fully Compensate 100 Arabs
Ordered to Move From Western Wall

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

JERUSALEM--Israeli authorities
Tuesday gave 100 Arabs two days
to leave homes and shops on the
street next to the Western Wall.
Israeli sources said 17 buildings
would be torn down for "security"
reasons.
The evictions followed the June
20 explosions in the street as thou-
sands of Jews were at Sabbath Eve
prayer at the wall. Six persons
were injured, and two American
tourists were treated for shock. So
far two Arab terrorist organize- -
tions have claimed credit for set-
ting the blast by three 10-pound
bombs.
Israeli officials said the evacuat-

West Germans Get El Fatah Threat

made an oblique threat against
German citizens in Arab countries.
The West German Foreign Minis-

Jordan, Dr. Hans Joachin Hille,
from an El Fatah member who

The writer said that El Fatah
could no longer be "responsible"
for the safety of West Germans in

injuries allegedly suffered by Arab

wald. There is among the Arabs a
delusion that they can wear Israel
down or wear us down. It will
never happen. Because we have
tasted liberty at last and the taste
is so sweet that we shall never
abandon it — the liberty of those
who are lifted up by Israel.
"Israel will be the salvation of
the world as well as of itself. The
word coming out of Israel is the
word of indestructibility. Israel
has proved that no matter how
small a people is, it can control its
own destiny. It is out of the rivalry
between East and West that we
compose our political strategy.
When the rivalry ends, we shall
emerge as a people vindicated."
