that had been accorded to Arab

tors who, in their eagerness
to perform a transplant op-
eration, are willing to declare
the donor as dead when the
brain waves cease although the
patient is still breathing.
"Religious law determines the
time of death as the moment when
breathing stops, and until the new
era of organ transplants this for-
mula had been the accepted prac-
tice in most civilized countries,"
the Agudath Israel statement de-
clares.
Saying the `Shema'
The practice of saying the
"Shema" prayer in bed is based on
the teachings of Rabbi Joshua ben
Levi who quoted the mystics as re-
garding it as a protection against
evil spirits.

DATES
to Revise Act Unifying
Laws on Organ Donations
NEW YORK—In a memorandum
sent to key legislators in Washing-
ton and to state governments
throughout the nation, Agudath
Israel of America called for re-
vision of the Uniform Anatomical
Gift Act, a measure which seeks
to unify all the state laws on do-
nations of organs of a deceased
person for transplant purposes.
This memorandum culminates
six months of negotiations by Agu-
dath Israel leaders with govern
ment officials on this bill which
has so far been presented to the
legislatures of 30 states.
In its memorandum, Agudath Is-
rael pointed out that "While the
motives of the Uniform Anatomical
Gift Act are noteworthy, because
the measure requires the consent
for any such organ donation and
establishes the rights of the next
of kin," it is unacceptable because
it keeps silent on the method of
determining "the time of death"
of the patient.
"The experience of recent
Years has indicated," said the
the practical approaches to the
issue by Israel.
"As Driven Sands" most reliably
adds towards an understanding of
an issue that has been used to in-
spire hate and which needs action,
with Israel ready to assist in solv-
ing it.
