THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Labor is one of the great ele-
ments of society — the great sub-

by one race of mankind subjected,
Year 5727 was signed by more
than 800 Rabbis of all three
branches of American Judaism
urging "our fellow Jews through-
out the United States to identify
with the program of the Zionist
Organization of America."
The call, which was made public
by Jacques Torczyner, president of
the Zionist Organization of
America, bears the signatures of
rabbis belonging to the Orthodox,
Conservative and Reform wings in
communities of some 40 states, in-
cluding the five boroughs of Great-
er New York.
Carmi M. Slomovitz, president of
the Zionist Organization of Detroit,
announced that a number of De-
troit rabbis joined in issuing this
call to American Jewry.
Taking note that the ZOA is
"rounding out seven decades of
epochal achievements for the
cause of Jewish statehood and
the welfare of the Jewish peo-
ple," the proclamation directs at-
tention to the unfinished major
tasks facing the Zionist move-
ment today. It avers that the
establishment of the State of
Israel, which it describes as an
"historic triumph of the Zionist
movement," is but a partial ful-
filhnent of the programs and
tasks of the Zionist Organization
of America.
"Even as Israel observes its 18th
anniversary," the call continues,
"its security is far from assured.
; Equally, the problem of Jewish
1 cultural survival in this country
and in other lands of the Diaspora
. : is cause for grave concern. Thus,
. safeguarding of the security of
i Israel and the cultural survival of
the Jewish people as a whole con-
stitute the two great tasks develop-
ing upon the Zionist movement to-
day."
In their call, the rabbis further
emphasize that "Zionism needs the
resources and numerical strength
of the world's largest and most af-
fluent Jewish community to help
the viability of the young State
of Israel." To this end they urge
support of the program of the Zion-
ist Organization of America
through "membership enrollment
