Hotchner Writes
Hemingway Book

"Papa Hemingway" by A. E.
Hotchner (Random House) is a
revealing document. It is literary
history as much as it is the story
of Hemingway by the man who
was so close to him, who had
worked with him and knew his
private life as much perhaps as
anyone.
He tells a b out Hemingway's
habits, his loves, his prejudices,
and he describes his literary at-
tainments.
Mary Hemingway tried to cover
up when Hemingway shot himself.
She called it an accident. Hoteh-
ner is not blaming her. He puts it
in the form of questions: "What
difference does truth make about
a thing like that? Does truth bring
back anything? Or assuage the
torment?"
Then the author reminisces:
"I found myself remembering a
question from the interminable in-
terview years before with the Ger-
man journalist at the Felipe II. He
had asked: 'Herr Hemingway, can
you sum up your feelings about
death' And Ernest had answered:
`Yes-just another whore.' "
Hotchner has written a most in-
teresting book about Ernest Hem-

bearing at all. All of the loss in number of children is due to a
smaller number of potential mothers in the child bearing years.
This is a crucial fact in understanding the future. If the present
level of fertility continues, as soon as there are more women in the
child bearing years, the number of Jewish babies born in Detroit
will rise again. The exact dimensions of this will be explored later
but it is comforting to realize that the 'facts' as seen, if only the
number of births are considered, are not really facts at all. Birth
rates in the Detroit Jewish community are really quite stable."
Comparing the Detroit Jewish community's figures with those of
the total White population of the United States, Dr. Mayer shows the
Detroit Jewish rate to be 74 per cent of the total, as indicated in this
