a serious problem and the whole
society is increasingly secular-
ized?, is the question posed by Mar-
ion X. Sanders in Harper's Maga-
zine for April.
For one thing, she answers, the
Jewish consciousness serves as a
"defense against the anonymity
and alienation which plague urban
America."
"The country would be poorer
if the Jewish culture vanished,"
Miss Sanders writes. " 'Cultural
pluralism' is an empty slogan un-
less subcultures flourish—not only
in ethnic groups but in our re-
gional traditions. All are in danger
of being homogenized in an Amer-
ica of identical super-markets and
subdivisions."
Since Jewish communities fos-
ter the Jewish consciousness, many
leaders make no effort to combat
discrimination in housing for their
people—though they fight discrimi-
nation against Negroes, Miss San-
ders points out.
The Jewish consciousness and
Jewish communities also benefit
the synagogues and fund-raisers,
she says.

JERUSALEM—Foreign Minister
Abba Eban Wednesday expressed
Israel's dissatisfaction over the
acquittals and light sentences con-
sistently handed down on Nazi war
criminals in trials in Austrian and
West German courts.
Eban indicated that dissatisfac-
tion in a statement he made in re-
plying to a complaint by a deputa-
tion. of survivors of Nazism and
partisans groups in Israel.
The delegation gave Eban a
resolution of protest against the
West German and Austrian courts.
THE CHEST EX-RAYS
TB, like other infectious respir-
atory diseases, is most prevalent
among people whose resistance
has been lowered by poor general
health. Frequent exposure to other
sickness, inadequate diet, poor
housing, and similar health prob-
lems make you more susceptible
to TB and other germs. Having
TB germs in your body does not
always mean you are sick, but
active sickness may develop. Peo-
ple in crowded homes and neigh-
borhoods are in greatest danger.
This is partly because they may
have close, day-to-day contact with
actively sick persons (many of
whom may not know there is any-
thing wrong with them). The chest
X-ray finds out if TB germs have
done any damage.

as in cities with physically cohe-
sive Jewish communities. The total
sum raised in the Los Angeles area
is less than it was in 1948 though
the. Jewish population has doubled
since then." She writes:
"Where there is a cohesive Jew-
ish community, as in Detroit, the
arm twisting takes the form of
what one unhappy contributor
called 'social blackmail.'
" 'Either you give what they say
you should, or you can't belong to

Iceland's President
Makes Historic Speech
Before the Knesset

JERUSALEM—President Asgeir
Asgeirsson of Iceland became the
first foreign head of state to ad-
dress Israel's parliament.
Speaking in English and Ice-
landic, the visiting president told
a festive session of the urgent
need for friendship between small
nations. He also touched on prac-
tical matters, including his belief
that trade between Iceland and
Israel should be expanded. Israel
sends citrus and preserves to Ice-
land, which exports fish to Israel.
Addresses by visiting heads of
state are to be a permanent fea-
ture of Knesset sessions in the
future. .
Israel is prepared to nego-
tiate peace terms directly with
the Arab states "at any time
and in any place," President
Zalman Shazar declared Wednes-
day in ceremonies at which he
said farewell to Asgiersson after
his three days in Israel.
A joint communique issued by
the two heads of state called for
maintenance of world peace and
expressed the conviction that all
disputes between all nations should
be settled on the basis of mutual
respect for national independence
and territorial integrity.
As President Asgeirsson depart-
ed, the government here greeted
another prominent visitor, Aus-
tralia's minister for external af-
fairs, Paul Hasluck. Hasluck is to
spend two days here and will con-
fer with Prime Minister Levi
Eshkol, Foreign Minister Abba
Eban and other senior Israel For-
eign Ministry officials. His visit is
the first ever made to Israel by a
member of the Australian cabinet.

The Harper article took its
author to Detroit where she in-
terview Albert Elazar, who is
described as having been pessi-
mistic about the results of Jew-
ish educational efforts in the
local schools; to the Shaarey Ze-

institutions.
Detroit is viewed by the writer
