Drives at New Peak; Population Studies Are Reported by CJFWF

NEW YORK (JTA)—Jewish com-
munity fund-raiSing campaigns in
the United States are currently at
the one-third . mark, 15 per cent
ahead of the pace set in 1965, when
an eight-year record was achieved,
the Council of Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds reported.
CJFWF, reporting findings of a
meeting of its board of directors,
said that the 1965 total of $132,-
000,000 raised by federations was
the highest in that eight-year pe-
riod. That sum was exclusive of
capital and endowment funds.
The board was told that the
newly-formed committee on fed-
eration planning for Jewish edu-
cation, headed by Mandell Berman
of Detroit, will work to establish
guidelines for federations to car-
ry out their responsibilities in this
area most effectively. The com-
mittee will first study the federa-
tion role in Jewish education after
bar mitzvah, as well as teacher re-
cruitment and training, and de-
velop plans to strengthen them.
The committee is working closely
with the American Association for
Jewish Education.
The board was told that there

was progress on the proposed the National Community Relations

Sea9;eing Propaganda
o Hitb-r's Old Yacht?

WASHINGTON (JTA) — An at-
tempt is being made by George ,
Rockwell's American Nazi Party
to acquire Hitler's former yacht,
now believed to be moored at Mia-
mi, Fla., for use as a seagoing
headquarters.
The 85-foot pleasure craft, built
especially for Hitler, was purchas-
ed by Americans after the war,
and brought to the United States.
Rockwell has been quoted as stat-
ing that he has found someone
willing to help finance the pur-
chase.
Hitler's yacht would again fly the
Nazi ensign, and Rockwell indicat-
ed he would seek to spread Nazism
from port to port, in America and
abroad. It was reported here that
he is seeking an international Nazi
crew, including World War II Ger-
man naval personnel who may
want to keep Nazism alive aboard
Hitler's personal yacht.

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

BONN (JTA)—Dr. Horst Fischer
was sentenced to death in East
Berlin last week after he was con-
victed of participation in the mur-
der of more than 70,000 victims,
mostly Jews, as one of the "selec-
tion" doctors in the Auschwitz
death camp.
During his trial in East Berlin,
one of the rare Nazi war crimes
trials in East Germany, Fischer
admitted his participation in select-
ing victims for the gas chambers
in the huge murder camp in oc-
cupied Poland.
He had lived in a small East
German town undisturbed for al-
most 20 years by authorities
though he did not change his name,
as most Nazi criminals did after
the war. He was sentenced to die
by the guillotine.
