India Hit in Parliament for Snub to Shazar
NEW DELHI (JTA)—Members
of Parliament challenged the gov-
ernment on the adequacy of facili-
ties and treatment accorded Is-
raeli President Zalman Shazar,
during the latter's recent travel
through New Delhi and Calcutta
on a state visit to Nepal.
Socialist members spearheaded
the attack, supported by some
members of the governing Congress
Party.
Deputy Foreign Minister Din-
esh Singh had a difficult time
explaining that the government
meant no discourtesy and that
the entire program had been
laid out last April in consulta-
tion with the Israeli consul in
Bombay.
A foreign ministry spokesman
told newsmen that the government
had "forewarned" Israel of India's
"inability" to provide official hos-
pitality to President Shazar, but
he noted that India did make
security arrangements for Shazar's
safety in New Delhi and Calcutta.
He said the facilities extended

to Shazar were "in keeping with
India's approach to matters con-
cerning Israel." India recognized
Israel many years ago but never
followed through with an exchange
of ambassadors.
The spokesman denied that
India's failure to show courtesy
to President Shazar stemmed from
pressure from the Arab League
or any Arab government.
Meanwhile, External Affairs
Minister . Swaran Singh told Par-
liament the Indian government
has taken "serious note" of "ten-
dentious and totally false" press
reports in Arab countries about
secret India-Israel talks for pur-
chase of Israeli weapons.
He said the statements were
made by "certain organizations in
some Arab countries" and that the
Indian government had taken the
matter up with various. Arab gov-
ernments and the Arab League.
He said that the government cate-
gorically denied negotiations on
arms with Israel, secret or open,
actual or contemplated.
In Jerusalem, Foreign Minister
Abba Eban told Parliament that
the government "regretted" the
Indian attitude toward President
Shaul- during his Calcutta stop,
and that he was sorry to note that
India did not have the courage to
disregard threats by Arab coun-
tries. Eban indicated he felt this
was the reason why India had
snubbed Shazar.
President Shazar was the tar-
get of a demonstration by 10
Arab students during his air-
plane's stopover at Calcutta,
India.
Declaring he had brought "re-
gards to an honest, industrious
and proud nation," the president
minimized the chilly treatment he
'received from Indian officials dur-
ing his stops in India. India has
recognized Israel but never ex-
changed ambassadors with it. He

The memories of Passovers gone by—the search and sale of the Chometz —Grandpa
poking around the kitchen, making the horseradish and the Choraches—putting on the
new suit of clothes and shoes—pockets full of hazel nuts—and almonds—anxiously
waiting for the Seder to start—Uncle Joe and Aunt Sadie were always late—the whole
family together--Grandpa looking like a king propping the pillow on the chair beside
him—Grandma tired after baking and cooking all day but "My Malke" my queen, he
called her—the Kiddush and then my turn for "Ma Nishtanah" and the answer given
with Grandpa's voice ringing out over all—the first half of the Hagadah almost over—
even the bitter herbs tasted so good—Passover it was always "strong"—all were com-
pelled to eat it otherwise we could not get the hard boiled egg and salt water—and
then the meal—nobody, but nobody, could cook better than Grandma—we ate—and
ate and then the "Benchen"—and the rest of the Hagadah—and some more cups of
wine—and the opening of the door—and the stories of how in the old country someone
frightened the whole family by appearing at that door—but best of all the tongs with
which the second half of the Hagadah abound—and the feeling of drowsiness—content-
ment—and the thought that tomorrow the same thing once more

NEW YORK (JTA)—Five young
men who kidnaped an Israeli nurse
from Welfare Island last October
pleaded guilty here last weekend
to first-degree attempted rape.
The original indictment listed 20
counts of abduction, and other
crimes for which, if convicted,
each defendant could have been
sentenced to 100 years' imprison-
ment.
The nurse, however, was too
shaken to testify, and the guilty
pleas were accepted as a com-
promise. The five were released on
bail pending sentencing, which is
set for June 23. The law provides
for a maximum 10 years' imprison-
ment on the charge to which the
men pleaded guilty.
Israel's National Wat^r Carrier,
now moving into Lill operation, is
expected to revolutionize the eco-
nomy of the country. The new sys-
tem, built with large-scale aid
from Israel Bonds, is bringing
water to areas which have been
barren for many centuries. The
National Water Carrier, whose
total cost is estimated at $100,-
000,000, is bringing water 100 miles
south from the Sea of Galilee.
