Planners for Vaad Harbonim Banquet Hebrew University's Universal Status
Emphasized at Dinner Honoring Kahn

Morris Karbal (second from left) will be general chairman of
the 28th annual banquet of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis of Metro-
politan Detroit (Vaad Harabonim) and Merkaz Feb. 27 at Cobo
Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Karbal were the hosts at a recent planning
meeting among whose participants were (from left) Morris J. Brand-
wine, Karbal, Rabbi Leizer Levin, Rabbi Joseph J. Rabinowitz, Rabbi
Chaskel Grubner, David J. Cohen and State Rep. Jack Faxon. Brand-
wine will serve as co-chairman of the annual citywide affair on
behalf of the Council.

Rabbis of 3 Branches Ask Community
to Keep 'Sanctity of Sabbath' Dec. 31

Dr. Samuel Krohn, president of
the Jewish Community Council,
announced that the Council has
forwarded to all of its member or-
ganizations a statement by Detroit
area rabbis calling attention to the
fact that the secular New Year's
Eve occurs on a Friday this year.
Signed by Rabbi Leizer Levin,
president of the Council of Ortho-
dox Rabbis; Rabbi Benjamin H.
Gorrelick, chairman, Rabbinical
Assembly, Michigan Region; and
Rabbi Leon Fram, chairman, Mich-
igan Association of Reform Rabbis,
the statement calls upon Jewish or-
ganizations to respect the sanctity
of the Sabbath by refraining from
the sponsorship of activities that
conflict with the observance of
Sabbath services.
Further, the rabbis empha-
sized that "parties and celebra-
tions associated with New Year's

Eve can be neither in keeping
with the spirit nor respectful of
an appropriate observance of the
Sabbath."
The statement concluded, "The
leadership and example estab-
lished by our organizations can
contribute, in this instance, to our
dignity and self-esteem as a com-
munity."
In forwarding the statement to
presidents of Council-affiliated or-
ganizations, Dr. Krohn noted that
the statement corresponds with
policy approved and adopted by
the Council's Delegate Assembly.

First Massachusetts Legislator
Isaac Rosnosky, an American
19th Century legislator, was the
first Jew to serve in the Massa-
chusetts State Legislature when
he was elected to that office in
1880.

Prominent Detroit physicians,
members of the special group
formed to assist in the work of
the Hebrew University in Jeru-
salem, last Saturday night created
the foundation for the Reuben L.
Kahn Laboratory in Immunology at
the Hebrew University-Hadassah
Medical School in Jerusalem.
More than 250 doctors and their
wives joined in the initial task,
with gifts to assure the construc-
tion of the laboratory in honor of
the eminent medical authority.
Two giants in medicine, Dr.
Kahn and Dr. Albert B. Sabin,
were among the evening's speakers,
at a black tie dinner at the Statler
Hilton. Other speakers were Dr.
Bernard Cherrick, executive vice-
president of the Hebrew Univer-
sity; Drs. Abraham Becker and
Max L. Lichter, co-chairmen of the
physicians' committee.
The Hanukah lights were lit by
Charles E. Feinberg, who also re-
cited a Hanukah prayer, and the
invocation was by Rabbi Milton
Rosenbaum.
Dr. Kahn, in a speech respond-
ing to the honors accorded him
and to the certificate presented
by Dr. Becker, spoke of the im-
portance of research and com-
mended such efforts in Israel as
serving the needs of all man•
kind. He expressed confidence
that discoveries as a result of
research in Israel will have an
impact on peace efforts between
Israel and the Arabs because
of the benefits Arabs will derive
from them.
Dr. Kahn placed greater empha-
sis on the importance of the im-
munology laboratory to Israel and
the need for research as a contri-
bution to science and to mankind
than on the fact that his name
will be honored by it.
Dr. Sabin heaped praise on the
Hebrew University and especially
commended Hadassah for the "re-
markable job" the women's Zion-
ist organization is doing in its en-
couragement to research activities
and its support of the medical pro-
gram in Israel. He said there is
need for an additional four-and-
a-half million dollars to provide
vitally needed buildings for the
medical school and hospital in
Jerusalem and urged Detroit's
physicians to assist in this effort.
Dr. Sabin regretted that Heb-
rew University faculties are
scattered all over Jerusalem, and
he pleaded for support of the
new building projects as a way
of solving this problem.
Dr. Cherrick pointed to the im-
portance of the Hebrew Univer-
sity as a heterogeneous result of
41 years of effort since the univer-

sity was founded in 1925. He said
there now are 12,000 students, in-
cluding many from a number of
Afro-Asian countries and 200 Is-
raeli Arabs.
"The university shows how a
20th century democratic state
conducts itself," Dr. Cherrick
said. Describing the cross sec-
tion of the student population,
he told of the positive ways in
which friendships are being
created at the university with
representatives of underdevel-
oped countries.
"Our efforts denote a positive
Jewishness and are not based on
pressures from anti-Semitism," the
university vice-president stated. He
took pride in the fact that the He-
brew University is a university
