Council of Orthodox Rabbis Lists
Procedures for Passover Preparation

In issuing its annual Passover ,
message to the Jewish community '
of Detroit, the Vaad Horabonim,
Council of Orthodox Rabbis, urged
that every Jew contribute to Mo'os
Hitim to assure Passover supplies
for the needy here. It also stressed
that great care be exercised in
purchasing all food products.
Among the points mentioned in
the appeal were:
1. Matzoth baked during the year
are not for Passover use; matzoth
must be properly designated as
"kosher for Passover."
2. Every product must be certi-
fied by a known rabbi or rabbini-
cal organization; attached labels
with the words "Kosher l'Pesach"
do not make the product permis-
sable for Passover.
3. All bakeries, groceries and
delicatessens are asked to sell
their hometz through a rabbi no
later than 10:45 a.m. Friday, April
16. A certificate issued by a rabbi
who arranges the sale should be
displayed in the business place.
4. For the duration of Pass-

over, it is prohibited to buy or
sell hometz, even to a non-Jew.

5. The search for hometz takes
place Thursday evening.
6. Siyum B'Chorim (the fast of
the first born) is held April 16.
7. No hometz may be eaten after
9:45 a.m. April 16.
8. Selling of hometz must take
place before 10:45 a.m. April 16.
9. Removal and burning of horn-
etz also must be done before 10:45
a.m.
10. Bakeries will be closed from
April 16 until after Passover. Bak-
eries making any baking prepara-
tions on April 24. before 8:15 p.m.,
are in violation, and these products
cannot be eaten even after Pass-
over. Questions on any rule for
Passover will be answered by the
Vaad Horabonim office, 342-6260.

Contract Brings Back Good (?) Old Days

Veteran Detroit educator Mich-
ael Michlin has turned up a copy
of the teaching contract he signed
with the Ahavas Achim Talmud
Torah in August 1919. The text,
translated from the original He-
brew by Michlin, is as follows:
A CONTRACT
A. We, the undersigned lead-
ers of the Talmud Torah "Aha-

vas Achim" are promising to
pay Mr. Michael Michlin the
sum of $1920.00 for teaching
twelve months from Oct. 1919 to
Oct. 1920.
P.S. If we shall pay any other
teacher more than the above
salary, Mr. Michlin shall' not
get less.
B. The above salary shall be

What's more, Michlin said,
there is no longer a "P.S." in
the contract, playing off one
teacher against the other for his
salary. Today, there is a modern

"agodoth" and songs.
E. Mr. Michlin shall get two
weeks vacation during the sum-
mer.
F. The above articles shall not
be changed without the consent

1914, when Michlin started to
teach in a storefront on St. An-

student on Friday afternoons.
"Of course, it had its compensa-

invited in for tea and cake."

Michlin, now principal of the
Beth Abraham branch of the Unit-

years at the Ahavas Achim Tal-

ister and Delmar. Soon after he
signed this contract, the school
agreed to take part in a new joint
educational effort, called the Unit-

munity, Bernard Isaacs, directed
this operation.)
