joie de vivre honestly, it is the
direct heir of one of the city's most
elegant "clubs" of the Twenties ...
Sammy Sofferin, affable proprie-
tor of the Wonder Bar, parlayed a
cigar stand, an apartment house
and the old Powatan Club into the
very successful Washington Blvd.
supper club . . . In addition to an
excellent menu, the Wonder Bar
features a delightful cocktail bar,
dancing on an intimate floor to the
music of Lee Walters, and a glit-
tering clientele . . . In keeping
with his belief that "good soups
and sauces are the hallmark of a
good restaurant," Sammy's Wonder
Bar lists black bean soup on its
daily luncheon menu and turtle
soup spiked with brandy on the
dinner menu . . . Other specialties
of the house include shrimps a la
Powatan, which consists of bread
shaped into a pyramid to which
are attached fried shrimp, chicken
livers, anchovies and scallops . . .
Around the base are frog legs .. .
Sammy insists that prime beef is
another key to running a successful
restaurant . . . The Wonder Bar
was the'first restaurant in Detroit
to introduce the boneless strip sir-
loin. known as the New York cut,
and this entree is still one of its
biggest sellers ... The Wonder Bar
Steak House as it is now called is
definitely a Detroit top spot to go
.. . Magnificent decor and reason-
able price.
ANOTHER N E W delicatessen
.
comes to the northwest part of De-
troit . . . Its. called "The Embers"
at 17244 . W. 7 Mile Rd. between
Greenfield and Southfield ... Just
opened last week . . . Owners Ed
Shapiro and -Phil Moscowitz have
, been in the delly business since
1950 and open daily at 6:30 a.m.
for breakfast, lunch and dinner ...
, They have a complete set-up for
, carry-out and tray catering . . . A
Honeyburger Sandwich is named
after Henry 'August, whose nick-
name of "Honey" (Cha.nya in Jew-
ish , was a natural for the title.
THE INNER , CIRCLE in the
Crestwood Motel on W. 3' Mile Rd.
is an intimate spot ala New York,
with a pleasant set-up overlooking
traffic at Northland ... Executives
in the area love the place . . .
Owner Iry Meckler is planning to
reopen the former Critics Club on
8 Mile Rd. . . . He'll call it the
"Purple Pussycat" with unusual
surprises in store for nitery fun-
festing.
JAN MURRAY, rated as a top
television host and comedy star, is
in the first of a two-week stay at
the Roostertail ... Appearing with
Jan is his sidekick and comedy foil,
songstress Rosette Shaw.
REASON WHY the bread and
pastries are so good at the Bagel
Restaurant on Woodward near the
Fox Theater, is that owner Martin
Eichelbaum comes from a family
of bakers and is a baker himself
... The New York rolls are authen-
tic . . . Martin was bOrn and raised
in the Big City . . . Most of the
pastries, hallas, rolls and bread
are baked in back . . . Its a show-
world "must" to stop at The Bagel,
whose being open until 4 a.m. make
it an eat and meet mecca for foot-
lighters. . . Many will remember
it as The Roxy (since 1932) until
15 years ago when its name was
changed to The Bagel.
