Importance of SNCC as Movement of 'New Abolitionism' Related by Zinn

There are so many aspects to the
race issue in this country that the
numerous movements that have
arisen need to be studied and un-
derstood in order that there should
be a complete appreciation of the
efforts of those who seek once and
for all time to end, the injustice
that dates back to the introduction
of slavery in Am'rica.

SNCC's many activities are re-
viewed here, and Dr. Zinn's story
reveals many of the unhappy oc-
currences, the tragedies that
have part of the chronicle of
racism and the battle against it.
The Freedom Rides, the Missis-
sippi tragedies, Georgia and Ala-
barna racist horror; are deline-
ated, and the total picture once
again reveals the inhumanity of
man to man anti the inherited
prejudices.

A very interesting account is
given of the role played in the
SNCC by its chairman. John Lewis.
He delivered one of the speeches
at the August. 1963 March on
Washington, but was induced to
change his prepared text in which
he had blamed our government for

inaction. Alabama-born 23-year-old
John Lewis intended to charge that
while Negroes were being shot and
beaten in Southern states the Ken-
nedys had spoken against racism
only in whispers. This was part
of the "I want to know' insistence
of the SNCC leaders.
Dr. Zinn acclaims the SNCC as
"the boldest movement yet to at-
tack the race problem in the
South." he declares: "Perhaps more
important than anything else will
be the example of white and Negro
students working together, creating
situations of intimat contact which
choke out prejudice."
It is the appeal to such joint
