Tel Aviv Garbage Men
End Strike; 2,000 Toris
of Leftovers Left Over

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Tel Aviv's
garbage collectors faced the monu-
mental task of carting away some
2,000 tons of refuse which piled ,
up in the city during a seven-day
strike which was settled last week.
The sanitation workers accepted
proposals for a settlement sub--
mitted by the Tel Aviv Labor i
Council. Uri Alpert, Labor Council 0
secretary, said the 800 workers
agreed to end the walk-out strike
on condition that negotiations be-
gan immediately for wage in-
creases.
The demands to be negotiated
include an extra effort payment
for 'working on the eves of 10
holidays and for work on Rosh
Hashanah eve.
The workers will receive an im-
mediate advance of 300 pounds
(WOO) on new municipal gradings,
scheduled to go into effect soon.
They will also receive extra pay
for the double effort needed to
clean up the garbage-laden city.

Esquire Story
Adds Evidence
Ao-ainst Nazism

The story "The Pious Brother -
. by Jakob Lind. in the current
issue of Esquire Magazine. is cer-
' tain to arouse a great deal of in-
terest and may create a new stir
akin to that of "The Deputy."
The author. an escapee from
Nazism—he was horn in Vienna in.
1927—gives an account of cruelty.
of sadism. of anti-Semitism.
The injection of the religious
element may be resented. But the
human factor is important.
There is the account of atroci-
ties, of the murdered Jew—"the
only human being I have on my
conscience." as the confession goes.
A former Nazi SS officer. now a
a Jesuit priest. remembers the
past as recalled in this tale. In a
sense, it is another addendum to
tie mass of evidence that con-
tinues to accumulate against
Nazism.
