Molly Lyons Bar-Davids
`Israeli Cook Book' Offers Foods for All Events
Molly Lyons Bar-David, an Israeli
citizen, is well known to Ameri-
can readers. She has authored
numerous essays, has written three
books, has compiled Israeli recipes
and has been the culinary adviser
to the El Al Israel Airlines. It
was in her latter capacity that she
conceived the idea of a cook book,
and "The Israeli Cook Book" she
has written, and which has just
been published by Crown (419 Park
Ave. S., N.Y.), is an impressive
result of a serious effort.
Interestingly, the jacket design,
made by Sophie Adler, has super-
imposed upon it the Hebrew words
"H a 1 a v u'Dvash" — "milk and
honey." It is most appropriate for
a volume the subtitle of which is:
"What's Cooking in Israel's Melt-
ing Pot?"
Many are the authorities credit-
ed with some of the translations,
with the origins of some of the
recipes, with the folklore relating
to them.
To liven up her work, Mrs. Bar-
David has drawn upon Talmudic
and folklore to insert explanations
and commentaries on holidays and
various periods during which some
of the suggested foods are applic-
able.
She begins with appetizers and
suggesting Felafel, Tahina a n d
Humos for Independence Day
(Israel's) she explains the various
dishes. In every section of her
book there are foods for every oc-
casion, for every festival as well
as for the Sabbath.
Thus, for Shavuot, she suggests,
among the fish recipes:
SOLE DUMAS
8 fillets of sole
6 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 onion, chopped
pound ripe tomatoes, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
1 clove garlic
3 /2 cup white wine
Put the fillets in a pan with the
butter or margarine. Do not fry, but
just stew the fish in the butter for
5-6 minutes. Remove the fish and keep
warm. Add the onion and tomatoes
the butter and cook, but do not brown.
Add the remaining ingredients and
cook to a rather thick paste. Dress
the sole in this sauce and place in a
400 degrees oven for 10 minutes.
(Serve 4 - 6).

Labor Zionists
Plan Seminar
"What Comes First?" will be the
the theme of an all-day seminar
planned by the Labor Zionist Or-
ganization starting 10 a.m. Sunday
at the Labor Zionist Institute.
Hy Faine, chairman of the na-
tional central committee, LZOA,
will be present. A frequent visitor
to Israel, Faine spent a year study-
ing the cooperative movements
there, at the invitation of Mrs.
Golda Meier, Israel foreign minis-
ter. Recently, he headed the Labor
Zionist delegation to Israel to set
up a new educational and political
program for the organization with
leaders of Mapai.
The two seminar sessions will
be held 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., ac-
cording to I. L. Shrodeck, chairman
of the Detroit Council, LZOA.
Aaron M. Bornstein is chairman of
the seminar committee.

Among the literary gems used
to illustrate her work is one used
for Passover, in connection with
the matzo knaidlach suggestions—
an excerp from Judah Steinberg's
"At the Matzos," which reads:
"Old grey bearded Hanach, the
kneader, kneaded his thoughts into
the dough . . . The dough stiffens,
the horny old hands work it with
difficulty . . . It is kneaded, cut
up in pieces, rolled and riddled—

them out into a new world . . .
there they are arranged in columns,
like Jithom and Rameses: Kik-ruk-

Symposium on
`Intermarriage' in
Honor of Author
"Intermarriage as I See It" will
be the topic of a symposium on
Sunday, April 26th at 8:00 in the
Sanctuary of Temple Emanuel,
Newton Center, Mass., in honor of
Rabbi Albert I. Gordon, whose
book, "Intermarriage: Interfaith,
Interracial, Interethnic," will be
published May 4 by Beacon Press.
The participants, Rev. Frank M.
Weiskel (Protestant), Rabbi Ste-
ven S. Schwartzchild and Bishop
Eric F. MacKenzie (Catholic), will
deliver their respective points of
view on the subject of intermar-
riage and will be moderated by
Judge David A. Rose.
Rabbi Gordon will respond
briefly at the end of the debate
before adjourning to the Temple
Community Hall where a recep-
tion will be held in honor of the
Rabbi and Mrs. Gordon.
More than 5,000 students have
participated in Rabbi Gordon's
nationwide analysis of intermar-
riage for this book. He has re-,
corded 17 interviews-in-depth with
the intermarried themselves. Cler-
gymen of the Protestant, Catholic
and Jewish faiths have all hailed
this book as an impcirtant contri-
bution to the literature on the sub-
ject of intermarriage.
Dr. Gordon Allport, professor of
psychology at Harvard University,
has described the book as "the
definitive study" on the subject.
