March 21st: "Is Ben-Gurion
Right About American Jewish

Drive for Rabbi Aaron
Kotler Memorial Fund

Detroit Jewry, in tribute to
the late Rabbi Aaron Kotler, is
undertaking to raise its share
for the $1,000,000 Rabbi Aaron
Kotler Memorial Fund Cam-
paign concurrently with the ef-
fort ' of the Orthodox rabbinate
in every major city in the Unit-
ed States.
Rabbi Aaron Kotler, world
renowned sage and Torah auth-
ority, died in New York on
Nov. 29 and was brought to
rest in Israel after unprecedent-
ed funeral services in New York
and Jerusalem where police es-
timated over 75,000 grief-strick-
en mourners turned out to pay
their last respects.
Virtually every major city in
the United StateS where Ortho-
dox Jews reside have conduct-
ed community-wide memorial
gatherings under , the aegis of
the _local rabbinate and an esti-
mated 150,000 persons have al-
ready joined in this unprece-
dented expression of national
grief at the loss of this out-
standing Torah scholar.
In conjunction with these ex-
pressions of mourning, the three
Orthodox rabbinic organiza-
tions, the Union of Orthodox
Rabbis, the Rabbinical Council
of America and the Rabbinical
Alliance of America, are spear-
heading a "$1,000,000 Rabbi
Aaron Kotler Memorial Cam-
paign" to strengthen and endow
the Beth Medrash Govoha, the
Institute of Advanced Learning
which Rabbi Kotler guided for
the past 20 years in Lakewood,
N.J., and from which hundreds
of leading rabbis and Torah
scholars have eminated to serve
communities throughout the
United States, Israel and the
far corners of the world. -

and divergent voices. Must we
always be divided by .organiza-
tional boundaries? What type of
internal discipline is possible
in the voluntary community of
the present?
April 4th: "Can You Change
a Tradition?" Some believe that
the Jewish tradition has out-
lived its relevance; others con-
sider it to be inviolable and
unchanging. Is there another
alternative? Are there criteria
for change?
April 11th: "Priest or Prophet
—Which Do We Need?" The
prophet, inspired by a vision of
the Absolute, speaks with a
passion for righteousness. The
priest is concerned with organ-
ized religion and the preserva-
tion of its ritual and institu-
tions. In modern Jewish re-
ligion, whose -role is more im-
portant? Should we devise a
new approach to religious ful-
fillment?
A discussion period and social
hour will follow the dialogues
to be held in the Youth Lounge
of Cong. Shaarey Zedek, 27375

public is invited to this series,

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Is-
rael's parliament defeated two
opposition motions to cancel a
Treasury directive requiring
banks to disclose the sums on
deposit in accounts. The mo-
tions had been sponsored by
the Liberal and Herut parties.
Finance Minister Levi Eshkol
assured the House that the
authority would be used only
in cases of depositors who re-
fuse to disclose their bank ac-
counts to income tax assessors.
He rejected charges that the
directive infringed on the privL
acy of citizens, citing laws in
the United States, Holland, Den-
mark and France which make
it possible for governments `to
obtain the cooperation of banks
in fighting tax frauds.
