Detroit Rabbis Will Dedicate Sabbath
Services to Allied Jewish Campaign

Detroit's rabbis will partici-
pate in the 1963 Allied Jewish
Campaign, by marking the 25th
anniversary of the United Jewish
Appeal at this week's Sabbath
services.
The rabbis have issued a
formal proclamation to be read
to their congregants and to be
printed in congregational bulle-
tins. In many synagogues and
temples, prominent laymen who
are volunteer campaign officers
or workers will deliver sermons.
Campaign Chairman Charles H.
Gershenson a n d Federation
President Max M. Fisher will
each deliver a sermonette at
Friday evening services at Tem-
ple Beth El.
The rabbi s' proclamation,
called "A Call, to Co.nscience,"
reads:
"The Allied Jewish Cam-
paign is a source of strength
for every cause which Juda-
ism holds dear. Not only does
it meet. the needs of our
brethren overseas and in Is-
rael, but it provides in our
own community the instru-
ments with which to heal the
sick, comfort the troubled,
feed the hungry, settle the
uprooted, care for the orphan

and aged, and support the
educational institutions which
guide our children in the
faith of our fathers.
"Throughout Israel's history,
the synagogue has always occu-
pied the central place in the
life of the community and in
the heart of the individual Jew.
The mitzvah of Tzedakah (phil-
anthropy) has always been
among his first concerns, call-
ing upon each and every mem-
ber of the community to share
the bounties of life with his
fellowmen.
"To help launch and assure
the success of our 1963 Allied
Jewish Campaign, and to com-
memorate the 25th Anniversary
of the United Jewish Appeal,
we, the spiritual leaders of this
great community in American
Israel, now call upon every con-
gregational member to give
generously of his substance, of
his time, and of his effort to
the Allied Jewish Campaign of
greater Detroit, and to provide
such support to the very limits
of his capacity..
"The synagogues and their
spiritual leaders have served
as constant reminders to our
people of the sanctity and im-
