Announcement was made this
week by the Detroit Board of
Education that one of the new
schools soon to be erected here
will be named in memory of
Boris Joffe.
The late Mr. Joffe was the
executive director of the Jewish
Community Council. He exerted
great influence in the community
in effeCting good will among all
religious and racial groups and
in the battle against race pre-
judice.
The Boris H. Joffe Elemen-
tary School will give relief to
the present MacCulloch, accord-
ing to the Board of Education
.announcement. I t s proposed
site is bounded by Kendall, Dex-
ter, Ewald Circle and Holmur
Streets. The board proposed to
acquire this site within a short
time.
In the Board of Education
announcement about the honor
accorded to Joffe's name, his
record of service is evaluated
as follows:
"Mr. Boris M. Joffe served
D e t r o i t, the nation and the
world during his 57 years as a
relentless and courageous ad-
vocate of the worth of the
individual regardless of race,
color, or creed. He was born in
Russia and graduated from the

Far East Imperial University
at Vladivostok. After coming to
America he taught at Stanford
and the American University.
In March of 1949 he was made
executive director of the Jew-
ish Community C o u n c i 1. He
assisted in scores of under-
takings both in terms of civic,
religious, and community serv-
ices during his ten years with
this organization. Mr. Joffe was
instrumental in the enactment
of the Michigan Fair Employ-
ment Practices Law and worked
unceasingly to better human
relations. He served as a mem-
ber of the Citizens Advisory
Committee on Detroit School
Needs and the Citizens Advis-
ory Committee on Equal Edu-
cational Opportunities. He is
remembered by hundreds of
immigrants as the man who
worked in Washington, D.C., for
the liberalization of the Immi-
grant Laws which restricted the
movement of the peoples of
Southern Europe to this coun-

Board and Assistant Secretary
of the Overseas Operations of
the American-Jewish Distribu-
tion Committee. Mr. Joffe died
in May of 1960 and is survived
by his wife, Miriam; two daugh-
ters, Rena and Shira; and a son
Victor.
The Board of Education also
voted to establish an Alice Mc-
Lellan B i r n e y Elementary
School honoring the memory of
the founder of the National
Congress of Mothers (later the
National Congress of • Parents
and Teachers).

Hebrew and Russian
in O.P. Adult Program
Aaron Kutnick will lead two
language • courses at Oak Park
High this fall as part of the Oak
Park School District for Adult
Education program. Conversa-
tional Hebrew and Russian will
be taught in two hour sessions
from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.,
Thursdays and Tuesdays, re-
spectively.
Both classes meet for 12
weeks and require a minimum
tuition payment of $7. The fun-
damentals of grammar for sim-
ple oral and written Hebrew
and Russian and the syntax
necessary for correct expression
will be taken up.
