Negro-Jewish Conflicts Described
by Ben Gallob in Article from JTA
Latent prejudices of Jews
and Negroes against one an-
other now are being manifested
in open conflicts, according to
former Detroiter Nathan L.
Edelstein.
The problem is described
by Ben G a 11 o b, in a JTA-
syndicated a n d copyrighted
article.
Chairman of the Governing
Council of the American Jew-
ish Congress, Edelstein pre-
sented a research report on the
subject at the recent plenary
session of the National Com-
munity Relations Advisory
Council.
He attributed his findings to
the growing urbanization of
Negroes, bringing them into in-
creasing contact with American
Jews.
Negroes resent Jews as
whites, in general, he noted,
as well as having acquired
varying degrees of anti-Sem-
itism as Christians, them-
selves.
Edelstein reported that north-
ern Negroes in recent months
have been agitated by seem-
ingly deliberate efforts on the
part of some of their leaders to
fan the flames of anti-Semitism.
"Stories and editorials in Ne-
gro newspapers have implied
that Jews are hostile to Negro
rights," said Edelstein. "There
is no reason to believe, however,
that anti-Semitism has affected
more than a small part of the
total American Negro commun-
ity.
"Influential Negro leaders
have publicly stressed the
contribution of Jewish organ-
izations to the fight for racial
equality, though it must be
emphasized, regretfully, that
the mass of the Negro corn-
munity is yet unaware of that
contribution."
Friction was traced, also, to
sociological changes which pre-
sent new problems as Negroes
assume new roles in society.
"The ordinary Negro first
knew the Jew as a landlord or
rent collector, as an employer
or as a retail shopkeeper whose
extension of credit often places
him in the status of the debtor,"
said Edelstein.
"The inevitable result is that
the Negro thinks of the Jew,
often without justification, as
an exploiter.
"Now with the economic rise
of the American Negro comes
the clash between the new
Negro member of the middle
class and his Jewish counter-
parts as competitors."
The situation is not all one-
sided, Edelstein charged.
Exclusion of prominent Ne-
groes from predominantly
Jewish clubs are particularly
exasperating to those Negroes
who expect that Jews, vic-
tims themselves, will refrain
from discriminatory practices
against other minorities, he
said.
Negroes run into resentment
and resistance in Jewish Neigh-
borhoods as well as white
Christian neighborhoods, h e
pointed out, in the classical
sequence of migration of minor-
ity groups in Northern cities.
"Genuine social acceptance
by Jews is at a minimum," said
Edelstein, "and, as a rule, we
find the usual fear, panic and
flight to the suburbs.
"In such situations, Jews act
like other whites."
In his analysis, Edelstein
emphasized that the leader-
ship of both minorities appeal
to their numbers to cleanse
themselves of bigoted atti-
tudes toward one another.
"But," he said, "despite gen-
uine efforts to preach and teach
equality there is a wide and
alarming gap between these
leaderships and their rank and
file."
More interchange of ideas is
needed, Edelstein said, between
the Negro and Jewish commun-
ities to dramatize the principle
that conflict between them only
serves the cause of the segrega-
tionist.
