One of the world's cruellest
men is the subject of a new
biography. In "Dr. Goebbels,"
published by Simon and Schus-
ter, Roger Manvell and Hein-
rich Fraenkel give a full ac-
count of the activities of the
evil person who created the
modern schemes of destruction
and whose inhuman designs
were responsible for much of
the misery people suffered un-
der Nazism.
Fraenkel had gathered much
of the material before he and
Manvell began work on this
book, having escaped from Ger-
many just before the Reichstag
fire. The early life of Dr. Joseph
JOSEPH GOEBBELS
Goebbels is described by the
biographers. Tracing his back-
ground, they show that the man
who became one of the worst
Nazi terrorists had studied at
the University of Heidelberg
under the Jewish Professor of
Literature Friedrich Gundolf.

"Worst of all," Marvell and
Fraenkel write, "is the revela-
tion of his desire to exterminate
the Jews in Europe. His state-
ments make it plain that he was
fully aware of the atrocities
that were being carried out in
Germany and the occupied ter-

Why does Jewish tradition
insist that the wine cup used
for Kiddush be full?
The cup of wine is the object
over which the blessings are
chanted in which the individual
pronounces the sanctification of
the atmosphere and the home
on the Sabbath. Since it is thus
used as a vehicle of sanctifica-
tion, it is required to be filled
up to the very brim so that man
will understand that there can
be no half measure of sanctifi-
cation. This applies to the cup
of wine, no matter what Mitz-
vah it is used for. When it is
used for Mitzvah it is known
as a "Kos Shel Brochoh" (cup
of blessing). It is at such occa-
sions that man acknowledges
the sanctity of his surroundings
and takes cognizance of the Al-
mighty's blessings. One is thus
enjoined to be completely
sanctified rather than partially
cognizant of the nearness of the
Almighty. Thus the cup must
be full so that we realize fully
whom we face at that moment.
