Virulent Press Articles Reveal
Tenuous Position of Jews in USSR

Revealing new light on the
tenuous position of Jews in the
Soviet Union has been shed by
recently published material in
provincial Soviet newspapers,
which are difficult to come by
outside the USSR and have, only
lately arrived here.
The articles, which appeared
during March and April of this
year, testify to the unabating,
virulent nature of the Soviet
press incitement against Jews
and Judaism. But beyond that,
one of them indicates the con-
tinuing sense of Jewish identi-
fication not only among ordi-
nary Jews, but, despite the dif-
ficulties, even among Soviet
Jewish functionaries in posi-
tions
tons of some importance in the
provinces.
Most importantly, perhaps,
another of the articles is a
harsh, explicit criticism of a
living Soviet Jewish writer—so
far as is known, the first such
direct attack since the inception
of the anti-Jewish press cam-
paign a few years ago.
Three of the articles 'are
"feuilletons," a form of didactic
feature article familiar to read-
ers of the Soviet press, which
appeared in the following news-
papers: "Commentary on 'Under
the Synagogue Vaults' " in
"Sovietskaya Bielorussia," pub-
lished in Minsk, White Russia
(March 21); "The Food of the
Gods" in Kazakhstanskaya Prav-
da, published in Alma Ata, Ka-
zakhstan (April 12); "A Syna-
gogue Event" in Radianska Bu-
kovina, published . in Cherno-
vitz, Bukovina (March 27).
Chernovitz, which has a popu-
lation of 70-80,000 Jews out of
a total population of about 150,-
000, has become a particular
center of anti-Jewish press agi-
tation. Three weeks before the
above-mentioned publication in

newspaper carried an attack on
Meir Kharatz, a Yiddish poet of
that city, who may be in some
jeopardy as a result.

JERUSALEM. — The Israel
committee of the Board of Depu-
ties of British Jews has voted
unanimously to recommend the
sending of an .official fraternal
delegation to the 25th World
Zionist Congress, it was dis-
closed Tuesday.
The action marks the first ac-
ceptance by a major central
body of European Jews of the
proposal by Dr. Nahum Gold-
mann, president of the world
Zionist Organization, to invite
non-Zionist Jewish groups to .
participate in the next World
Zionist Congress on a non-vot-
ing basis. The next Congress
will be held in Jerusalem in
December. The proposal is a ; _i;
key aspect of Dr. Goldmann's -
plan to expand the World Zion- ,;
ist organization to include rep-
resentation of all mafor Jewish
communities in the world.
