The social angles, the finan-

that come to those called upon
to perform abortions—as one of
the interns does—provide a lot
of action to the story.

Richard Frede, 26 - year - old
. newspaperman, has attained re-
markable results, in good writ-
ing and medical research, with
his second novel, "The Interns,"
which has just been published
by Random House.
There are a number of very
valuable aspects to this novel.
Its major achievement is the
description of the difficulties
that are encountered by gradu-
ates from medical schools in
their roles as interns. Then
there are the problems that be-
set hospitals.
There is a real challenge
in the case of one of the pa-
tients who suffers from the
silent disease of syringomy-
elia, who knows that he is
doomed to die, who wants
death to come quickly, so that
the meager funds should not
dwindle quickly, thus leav-
ing his wife without means
of sustenance.
He pleads for help to die and
the doctors argue with him.

chief of staff in order that he
be unavailable for action, the
intern's fiancee then makes a
confession and she loses the
right to graduate as a nurse.
The upshot of it is the sum-
mary by one of the interns:
"Why are we doctors? . . .
Not because there are those
who need to be cured, but
because there are those who

And then this intern declares

That is about all there is in

is accepted and treated well.
"The Interns" will be read
with great interest by practic-

them of their own early diffi-

interns a better understanding
of their status: that's the lot of

laymen about medicine, hospi-

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
bank of the West German trade
unions and cooperatives plan
to invest funds in housing con-
struction in Israel.
David Tanne, director of the
Labor Ministry's housing divi-
sion, who recently returned
from the United States, where
he headed a delegation of Is-
raeli contractors - negotiating
American investment poten-
tials, reported details of the
commitment to principle re-
ceived by the delegation from
a -group of American businesS-
men and contractors.
As a result of that commit-
ment, the Israeli contractors
will 'receive a loan of $2,500,00
for private housing while the
Government will get $9,500,000
for government housing schemes
and commercial centers. The
American investors will lend
the money at nine percent to a
