MONTREAL, (JTA) — Th e
sum of $15,000 has been be-
queathed to the Canadian Jew-
ish National Fund by the late
Lionel. S. B. • Shapiro, war cor-
respondent and author, it was
announced here by Justice
Harry Batshaw, chairman of
the Canadian JNF Foundation.
He said the money would be
used to commemorate the mem-
ory of Shapiro with a forest of
10,000 trees in the Canada For-
est in Israel
The correspondent was the
author of four books. His final
book, "The Sixth of June," de-
scribing the Normandy invasion
which he covered as a war cor-
respondent, was a Book-of-the-
Month-Club choice and won him
the Goevrnor-General's Award
for fiction in 1955. He died here
May 27, 1958.

MEXICO CITY. (JTA) —
The Central Jewish Committee
here announced the 1959 win-
ners of the Zvi Kessel prizes
in Jewish Literature. The recip-
ients of the awards are:
A. S. Stein of Tel Aviv for his
work in Hebrew on the Pseudo-
messianic movement of Yaacov
Frank—"And The Fire Left
Ashes"; Dr. Solomon Simon of
New York, for his work in Yid-
dish "In The Days of the first
Prophets"; and Rabbi I. M. Fish-
leder of Mexico and Hirsch
Abramowitz of New York, who
shared one prize, the former for
his Hebrew book "The Fortress
of Israel" and the latter for
his Yiddish work "Personalities
That Are No More."
The Zvi Kessel prizes for $350
each were established in 1947
by the Mexican philantropist
Harry Zvi Kessel, and are ad-
ministered by the Central Jew-
ish Committee.
