Yorker activities, but he left
Ross and his weekly in 1947
when he was beginning to lose
his sight.
Thurber is a master illustra-
tor and his drawings had en-
riched the New Yorker. He re-
fers to himself as "cartoonist,
writer, playwright," and in the
first two categories he emerges
with great skill in "The Years
with Ross," since it is not only
the account that is his, in a
very fine style, but also all the
drawings.
The rise of the New Yorker,
its struggles, its small begin-
nings and its high aims, are
told most interestingly. In each
fascinating development, Ross
played a role of note. Thurber
describes how the New Yorker's
chief editor and publisher ac-
quired the best known writers,
how he enlisted the ablest men
of the time to help him build
a periodical that became the
envy of all publishers.
Of special interest is Thur-
ber's account of the role played
in Ross' set-up by Bernard
Bergman. This able writer, who
now is the editor of the Phila-
delphia Jewish Exponent, re-
mained with Ross for two years
before quitting as one of the
New Yorker "geniuses." Then
Bergman went to the New York
American to build up its
"March of Events" page.
The Bergman story, as told
by Thurber, is one of many that
combine to make "The Years
with Ross" a thoroughly enjoy-
able and instructive book. This
i s one of the literary creations
hat will no doubt remain
, mong the better - circulated
ooks for a long time.

To Our Friends and Patrons

Sharp attacks on Nehru,
Lasser and neutralism and a
ortfolio of Israel investments
re featured in the Dec. 9
sue of "Jerusalem Cable."
Defining "neutralism" as a
r. olicy which does not distin-
uish between good and evil, it
ccuses both Nasser and Nehru
o f abandoning "all morality and
a 11 principles to get what he
c an, where he can, while he
c an."
The article warns that new-
if ound friendship of Nehru for
t he west is only "a wisp of straw
b rought by the icy blasts of a
C hina wind, a wisp that will be
q uickly carried away when the
irection of the wind changes
gain."
Published twice monthly in
nglish, "Jerusalem Cable" is
new independent periodical
ringing "a unique perspective
n world affairs and survey of
fe in Israel." Its archaeologi-
al and religious news appeals
Christian as well as Jewish
ri aders and provides them with
a typical Israeli reaction to
world happenings.
