'Assassin's Memoir'
Is Repelling Story
Under the sensational title
"Memoirs of an Assassin—Con-
fessions of a Stern Gang Killer,"
Thomas Yoseloff (11 E. 36th,
N. Y. 10) has published a 200-
page confessional "by Avner."
The jacket with the publish-
ers' explanatory notes is of far
greater interest than the book
itself. Commencing with a quo-
tation from the so-called killer
organization's slogan.
"Long live our friend, the
machine gun!
Long live our friend, the
revolver!",
the publishers state that the
book is a confession of "one
of the most trusted execution-
ers of the Lehi (Stern Gang),
is neither an apology nor an
attempt to justify the actions
of the Stern Gang. It is, rather,
a forthright account of the
crimes of an educated gunman
who killed efficiently with no
twinge of conscience or re-
morse."
The book was translated from
the French by Burgo Partridge
who does question some of the
facts in t h e

Among the fantastic stories
in the book is an account of a
purported plot to assassinate
the anti-Semitic British Foreign
Minister, the late Ernest Bevin.
The plotters failed in their ef-
forts.
In defense of Israel, we
quote this explanation by the
publishers on the book's
jacket: "The author, now liv-
ing in exile because the estab-
lished State of Israel refuses
to harbor men of his kind,
was a killer by choice, not a
fanatic dedicated to a cause."
What interests this reviewer
is not the fanatic's sentiments
but the explanation that Israel
rejects him. That's understand-
able, if the story.in the book is
true. It is not a fair account of
Palestinian Jewry's and Israel's
fight for freedom. The book
itself is less impressive than
the publishers' s t a t e m en t.
"Memoirs of an Assassin" is a
very dull story. It is not even a
good mystery.
Recently, we reviewed the
stirring account of "Shai"—the
Israeli "Sherut Yediot", the
Jewish information or intelli-
gence service which assisted in
defending the Jewish position
in Palestine. That was a true
and an honorable account of
Jewry's resistance to tyranny.
That was not unpremeditated
murder. In contrast with "Shai"
by Efraim Dekel (also published
by Yoseloff), we were repelled
by "Memoirs of an Assassin."

Fares to Israel 'Slashed
The International Air Trans-
port Association, which recently
met in Honolulu, accepted an El
Al suggestion for air fare re-
ductions to Israel. During the
winter season (Nov. 1- March
15), groups of 25 persons and
over coming to Israel on all-
inclusive tours will enjoy an
approximate 50% reduction on
return flights from any city in
western Europe. There are also
special reduced rates for groups
of six persons or more.
During the summer season
(June 15 - Oct. 31), fares for
groups under the same condi-
tions as above will be reduced
by 40%. These rates are avail-
able on all air lines servicing
Israel.
