Folk Chorus Sets Emil. Cohen .to. Star
at SZ Men's Event
Schafer Work

Jacob Schaefer's dramatic or-
atorio "Martirer Blut" will be
presented by the Detroit Jewish
Folk Chorus as the principal
work in its annual concert.
Under the direction of Har-
vey Schvey Schreibman, con-
ductor, the concert will be pre-
sented at 8 p.m., Jan. 25, in the
Detroit Institute of Arts.
Guest artists will be Howard
Fried, New York tenor, Shosha-
na Freedman, soprano, and El-
lis Freedenson, bass, the latter
two singers well-known in De-
troit musical circles.
In addition to the 55-voice
Folk Chorus, a youth chorus of
45 voices will be heard for the
second successive year in a
number of compositions.
Besides the Schaefer orato-
rio, there will be shorter works
by the composer and contempo-
rary Yiddish, English and Is-
raeli songs.
Tickets for the concert are
available from all members of
the Chorus or by calling S. Mil-
grom, UN 1-2606.

teen-age school columnist of
The Jewish News, will be pre-
sented on the Captain Kangaroo
television show here next week.
The author is Mrs. Morton
Gottesman, of 23450 Geoffrey
Ct., Oak Park. She will be re-
membered by many Jewish
News readers as Alice Jean
Harris, who, as a teen-ager,
wrote the Central High School
activities column from 1947-49.

ers now is her own three-year-
old son, Richard, who will be
watching her script when it is
shown here.
The play is due to be seen
during the early part of Mon-
day morning's Captain Kanga-
roo telecast, which begins at 8
a.m., and is carried over WJBK-
TV, channel 2.

An evening with Emil Cohen
is planned by the Men's Club
of Cong. Shaarey Zedek at 8:30
p.m., Wednesday, in the syna-
gogue social hall, it is an-
nounced by Abe Katzman, presi-
dent.
Chairman of the evening is
Ivan Meisner. Cohen, one of
most popular entertainers in the
country, is known primarily as
a humorist.
The son of a cantor, he also
has a powerful tenor voice and
a rich background in Jewish
life, from which he draws his
stories of both American and
Yiddish humor.
The public is invited to the
program and to a social hour
which will follow.

The final program will be pre-
sented by Oak-Woods Lodge at
8:30 p.m., Thursday, at the Sho-
lem Aleichem Institute. The
Eddie Cantor film, "Our Best
Ten Years," will be shown.
Both programs are open to
members and their friends.

Tuesday Musicale Sets

of the Tuesday Musicale at
10:30 a.m., Tuesday, in the lec-
ture hall df the Detroit Institute
of Arts.
Several works will be heard
for the first time in Detroit,
including compositions by Amer-
icans Samuel Barber and Gian-
Carlo Menotti; Frenchmen Paul
Paray, Henry Barraud and Fran-
cis Poulenc; and a group of Rus-
sian piano pieces by Scriabine,
Gretchaninoff and Bortkiewicz.
A trio for piano, violin and
cello by Malcolm Arnold will
conclude the program of inter-
national music. Arnold is a lead-
ing British composer whose
march from "The Bridge on the
River Kwai" sold a million
copies in Europe alone.
