NEW YORK (JTA) — Radio
transmission in the Hebrew
language, with the messages
received in Hebrew characters,
was described as an "imminent
possibility" following experi-
ments conducted by the Jewish

Hebrew Corner
The Midget
Translation of Hebrew column.
Published by Brit Ivrit Olamit.
I have a friend who is a
member of one of the large
kibbutzim in the country. About
a month ago he invited me to
come to the kibbutz for sev-
eral days. I was happy at the
invitation and decided to go
(travel) to him.
On the morrow after my ar-
rival we went out strolling. My
friend wished to take me to
the vineyard and show me a
special type of grapes. On our
way we passed by the large
garage. In it stood in a long
row tractors of all types and
all sizes: yellow ones, red and
green one, on wheels and on
chains.
"Like in a large American
farm", I said to my friend in
amazement.
"Not exactly", my friend cor-
rected me. "On an American
farm you will find all the trac-
tors standing here (by us) —
except one".
He pointed to the corner of
the garage, where a small, new
tractor stood.
"That is ours", said my
friend proudly. "It is called
"midget" (that is, small. one).
It is assembled in our coun-
try. For the time being it is
only assembled and not pro-
duced, but that, too, is a great
achievement".
We approached the small
tractor in order to see it at
close range. "It can compete
with any other small tractor in
the world", my friend told me,
"and after it will come the
larger ones. Perhaps in another
few years I will be able to
bring you here and tell you
that not a single one of our
tractors is to be found on an
American farm".
communications organization.
The new method would per-
mit Israeli newspaper cor-
respondents here to write their
messages in Hebrew characters
and have them transmitted to
Israel in that form. At present,
correspondents here transcribe
Hebrew into phonetic English
and their messages are trans-
mitted in English characters.
In experiments here, Yiddish
texts—news stories prepared
for transmission to the Yiddish
newspapers by wire circuits—
were transmitted by radio fac-
simile and received on a tape-
style receiver. The system was
described as less subject to
static and other atmospheric
disturbances than radio printer
transmission.
The JTA-Press Wireless ex-
periments indicated that there
were no technical barriers to
commencement of a facsimile
broadcast service using the
tape-style receivers. Experi-
ments are being continued in
the use of a page-type receiver.
Press Wireless has success-
fully operated the system on
an extensive test basis between
New York and Tokyo, using a
relay repeater at San Fran-
cisco. The Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, which uses the trans-
mitting facilities of Press Wire-
less, contemplate establishment
of a similar circuit between
New York and Tel Aviv. The
JTA established the first di-
rect radioprinter circuits be-
tween New York and Tel Aviv
earlier this year for transmis-
sion of its own news service to
the Israel press.

Indonesia's Jewish
Community Drops by
Two-Thirds in 9 Months
Within the past nine months,
the tiny Jewish community of
Indonesia has dropped by two-
thirds, according to informa-
tion reaching the World Jew-
ish Congress in New York. Paki-
stani Jewry, the WJC learns,
has also decreased consider-
ably in recent years.
Dr. I. Schwarzbart, director
of the WJC's Organization De-
partment, said that as of Sept.
18, 1958, the total number of
Jews in Indonesia was 150, as
compared with 450 prior to the
recent Indonesian action against
Dutch interests. Among the 300
Jews who left were families of
various nationalities. They mi-
grated to Israel, Holland, Amer-
ica, New Zealand and other
countries.
Quoting a report received
from the Indonesian commu-
nity, Dr. Schwarzbart said that
the largest number of Jews is
in Surabaja, which has a com-
munity of 110. There are 20
in Djakarta, 10 in Bandung
and 10 in other cities.
The Jews remaining in Indo-
nesia, the report added, suffer
no discrimination of any kind.
Another report received by
the Organization Department
showed that the community of
Pakistan, once numbering 2,-
500, is now down to between
450 and 500. The community
of Lahore has disappeared com-
pletely, while only a handful
of Jews live in Peshawar. The
main community is centered in
Karachi, where ther is a syna-
gogue, a welfare society and
other communal institutions.
