Strelzin Library
Dedicated in Israel

American ambassador to Is-
rael Edward B. Lawson and
New York engineer and com-
munal leader Alfred Strelzin
were among those who attended
the dedication of the Moshe
Strelzin library in the Bet
Hagudim and the planting of
49 pine trees in the U. S. grove.
The library was donated by
Alfred Strelzin, in memory of
his brother Moshe, who was
killed in the defense of Tel
Aviv while a member of the
Jewish Legion in World War I.
The pine trees were planted to
honor the entry of Alaska as
the 49th state in the United
States.
Ambassador Lawson, speak-
ing at the dedication, praised
opening of the library as a step
towards man's understanding
of man, and as "an invaluable
instrument of peace."
Strelzin spoke of the develop-
ment of Israel since the time
of his brother's death and the
pride he would have shown in
the State's accomplishments.
He praised the Jewish Legion's
efforts in the war and expressed
admiration for its veterans,
many of whom attended the
ceremonies.

Desegregation Issue Is
Major Challenge toADL

DENVER (AJP)—ADL na-
tional director Ben R. Epstein
told the Intermountain Jewish
News here that the South's
school desegregation crisis con-
fronts the Bnai Brith Anti-
Defamation League with its
toughest policy problems in
more than 20 years.
Appearing as the chief speak-
er . at the Colorado-Wyoming -
New Mexico ADL -Conference
here last week, when Jesse
Shwayder received an award
for human relations achieve-
ments, Epstein declared that
the dilemma of Southern Jewry
forces all defense agencies,
and particularly the Anti-De-
famation League, to consider
the feelings of Jewish people
below the Mason-Dixon Line in
trying to fulfill their tradi-
tional policies of combatting
discrimination against Negroes
and other minorities.
"ADL tries to be guided by
its local constituency in the
South as much as it can and
still remain within its national
policy."
