Unique Discoveq:
No Asara b'Tebet
Occurred in 1919
The Jewish News made an
interesting discovery, as a re-
sult of an inquiry.
A woman reader called to
find out when Asara b'Tevet
occurred in 1919.
We were compelled to in-
form her that there was no
Asarab'Tebet that year.
Asara b'Tebet — the Fast of
Tebet, occurring on the tenth
day of that Hebrew month—
fell on Dec. 13 in 1918. But
the next Fast of Tebet skipped
a year and occurred on Jan.
1, 1920. The reason: the first
half of 1919 included two
months of Adar: it was the He-
brew leap year of 5679.

Once-Great Chinese
Jewish Community
Dwindles to 300
The Chinese Council of the
Jewish Community, in a recent
report on its activities. noted
the condition of the dwindling
number of Jews in the main
cities of Shanghai, Tientsin and
Harbin has left them with fewer
than 300 Jewish persons. But
this remnant remains' conscious
of its Jewishness and is organ-
ized to provide assistance for
sick and destitute members.
aids Jews in emigrating to other
countries and maintains syna-
gogues and cemeteries.
The organization also assists
in claims made by many Jews
against the German government
by providing certificates noting
the length of time persons were
detained in Shanghai during
the war. Twenty thousand Cen-
tral European Jews found re-
fuge in Shanghai at the time
the Nazis were persecuting
them. Records are kept by the
community of all these persons.
The Community receives aid
from the American Joint Dis-
tribution Committee to the ex-
tent that their expenses run
in excess of money collected
locally. A small number of ded-
icated persons still maintain
the ancient cemeteries and are
handling arrangements for re-
location as the government
takes over the now urban land
for residential purposes.
The report also states that
the Jewish community enjoys
the generosity and kindness of
the Chinese people and the
Chinese People's Government.

Manischewitz Recipe
for Fruit Torte Pie
.
...7•••••••
FRUIT TORTE PIE
From the test kitchens of the
B. Manischewitz Co. comes this
interesting recipe, especially re-
leased in time for the High Holy
Days:
FRUIT TORTE PIE
3 egg whites
Dash salt
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup sugar
-3/4 cup chopped walnuts
3 /4 cup Manischewitz Matzo
Meal
• teaspoon baking powder
2 to 3 cups canned or
frozen fruit, drained
sweetened whipped
cream (optional)
Beat egg whites and salt until
frothy. Add sugar gradually,
beating until stiff peaks are
formed. Add almond extract
with the last of the sugar. Com-
bine nuts, matzo meal and bak-
ing powder; fold this mixture
into the beaten egg whites.
Spread in a well-greased 9" pie
pan, pushing mixture up along
the edge so that a shell is
formed. Bake in a slow oven
(300'F) 45 minutes or until deli-
cately browned. Cool. Just be-
fore serving, fill with drained
fruit. Top with whipped cream
if desired.
