Edison Holds School
for Contractors

Local electrical contractors
will have a chance to brush up
on their technical lighting skills
beginning Oct. 14 and 15. They
will do so by attending a series
of evening classes conducted
and sponsored by Detroit. Edi-
son. Classes will be held for
seven consecutive weeks on
Tuesday and Wednesday eve-
nings at 7 p.m. at Detroit
Edison's Service Building, 2000
Third Ave. All electrical con-
tractors in the area are invited
to attend.
According to H. R. Stevenson,
manager of sales, "There have
been so many advances in light-
ing techniques within the past
few years, the busy electrical
contractor is hard-pressed to
keep up with all of them."
New lighting techniques for
use in offices, stores, factories
and institutional type buildings
will be studied exclusively.
Those who successfully com-
plete the course will be award-
ed Lighting Proficiency Certifi-
cates by Detroit. Edison. Regis-
tration fee is $5.

Too Much Ado
About Only 5%

Problems of race relations
would dissolve more readily if
people recognized that like-
nesses among all human beings,
"whatever their color, are about
95%, their differences only
about 5%," according to Ash-
ley Montagu, noted anthropolo-
gist and author of "Man, His
First Million Years."
In the past, he declared, "we
i have heard too much about the
differences and not enough
about the likenesses, because
differences were emphasized
rather than likenesses." Most
scientists are agreed, however,
he pointed out, that all men are
"descended from the same hu-
man ancestral stock and resem7
ble each other much more than
they differ."
Montagu's report, "What We
Know About 'Race'," has been
issued by the Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith as part of
its One Nation Library series
of pamphlets for young adults.
The One Nation Library is pub-
lished • by the League in co-
operation with the Joseph Kap-
lan Project in Intergroup Edu-
cation. The project, established
by Joseph Kaplan, Boston indus-
trialist and philanthropist, is
designed to further the applica-
tion of American democratic
ideals to American life and
group relationships.
A leading authority on "race"
and evolution, Montagu empha-
sized that "there are actually
very few people anywhere who
have a clear and correct idea
as to what 'race' is."
He added that "some scien-
tists feel that the word 'race'
has become so confused, so
weighed down by emotional and
false meanings that it is beyond
rescue."

Israel Names Minister
to Bulgaria; Improved
Relations Expected

TEL AVIV,

(JTA)—The Is-
rael government announced the
appointment of Nathan Peled,
Mapam leader, to be its Min-
ister to Bulgaria.
Though Peled's selection was
made several months ago, it is
understood, the Israel govern-
ment was holding off naming
him as Minister while Sofia de-
layed payment of indemnifica-
tion for the shooting down of an
El Al passenger plane in 1955.
However, since the case has
been moved to the International
Court of Justice, it was decided
to proceed with the announce-
ment of a Minister to Sofia.
Observers here expected the
appointment to lead to an im-
provement in relations between
the two states. The naming of
a left-wing personality as Is-
rael's representative in a capital
of Soviet-oriented state repre-
sents a revival of a tradition
which is several years old. It
dates back to the time when
Israel Barzilai, Israel's current
Minister for Health, represented
his government in Warsaw.

of terror and irresponsibility."

OFFENBURG (JTA) — Dr.
Erich Wagner, a physician un-

aided in inhumane medical "ex-
periments" at the Buchenwald
concentration camp during the
Nazi regime, attempted to com-
mit suicide in his jail cell, but
the effort was frustrated.
