lic Welfare Commission, joined
last Tuesday to surprise him at
a celebration honoring his 50th
birthday.
Small, who has been active
in private law practice for 30
years, has served in public of-
fice on an appointive or volun-
tary basis for much of that
time, and is active in a number
of communal groups.
Born in Philadelphia, he has
been .a Detroit resident since
his childhood, graduating from
Northern High School, Wayne
State University and Detroit
College of Law.
His first public post was as
Assistant Attorney General as-
signed to the Public Trust Com-
mission under Governors Frank
Fitzgerald and Loren Dickinson.
Active in Republican Party
politics for many years, Small
is a close friend of former New
York Gov. Thomas E. Dewey,
and figured prominently in
Dewey's campaigns for the
Presidency in Michigan.
Small was appointed to the
Welfare Commission by the
late Mayor Albert E. Cobo, and
has served on a voluntary basis
for over five years. This year,
by virtue of a rotating chair-
manship, he heads the Commis-
sion. In that capacity, he also
serves as a member of the
Wayne County Board of Super-
visors.
A charter member of Temple
Israel, he also is a member of
Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith,
the Masons, Moslem Temple,
Detroit Historical Society and
was a founder of the Square
Club, a non-partisan political
discussion group.
Small • was recently joined in
his law practice by his son,
Stuart, a recent law graduate.
He lives at 1570 W. '7 Mile
with his wife, Lina, a past
president of the League of
Jewish Women's Organizations
and an active clubwoman, an-
other son, Michael, and a
daughter, Candace.
