Trees
By DAVID BEN-GURION
Editor's Note: We hereby
reprint a significant state-
ment by David Ben-Gurion,
Israel's Prime Minister, on
the importance of trees for
the Jewish State.
We must plant hundreds of
thousands of trees covering an
area of five million dunams, one
quarter of the surface of our
country; we must cover the
mountains and the uncultivable
land, the hills and the sand
dunes, the barren plains of the
Negev—all the land of Edom
and of the Arava, as far as
Eilat. We must plant these trees
for many reasons, not least for
security, all along our frontiers,
our highways and roads, around
public buildings and military
installations.
We would be unfaithful to
one of the two main tasks of
our State—the revival of the
desert—if we were to carry out
plans which satisfy only our
immediate needs. We are an
entirely new state which has to
make up for the neglect of gen-
erations, for sins against our
people as well as our country.
We shall have to mobilize all
the skilled labor in this country
so that, in the course of the
years, we may reach a point
where we plant half a million
dunams of trees annually.
The mountains of our country
still stand naked and pray for
the hand of the planter to re-
store their pristine woods and
forests . . . We are under no
obligation to accept the heritage
of desolation from the past, for
it is within our power to afforest
the waste, to fertilize the sand
dunes, to dig wells, to exploit
the hidden resources, to build
and to revive the dust of the
earth, to redeem its minerals
and natural resources — indeed,
this is the true conquest of the
land; this, indeed, is the great
mission which the Jewish Na-
tional Fund is called upon to
undertake in our own day.
Israel Exports
of Citrus Rise
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Israel
increased its exports of citrus
fruit to 8,000,000 cases this
year, about 500,000 cases more
than was originally estimated.
The increase was due in part
to poor conditions in other
citrus-raising areas and in part
to Israel's successfully beating
off a serious insect threat to
its crop. A dry season in Spain
and cold weather in California
gave Israeli growers an oppor-
tunity to enter new markets,
including Canada which nor-
mally purchases from Cali-
fornia groves.
Zvi Isaakson, president of
the Farmers' Association, who
returned from Canada recently
said the Dominion's eastern
cities are as close to Israeli
ports as California. Thus far
Canadian purchases from Israel
have amounted to only 100,000
cases, but it is expected that
this may yet be raised to
500,000 cases.
In Germany the only grape-
fruit on sale is Israel-grown.
Reports from most European
markets indicate that Israeli
fruit is bringing a fair price all
over.
Oil Pipeline from Ashdot to Haifa Refineries
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Work
was begun recently on the ex-
tension of the oil. pipeline from
Ashdot to the refineries in
Haifa and more than six miles
of pipe has already been laid
in place and welded.
The 9,000,000 pounds project
is expected to be ready for
operation in June. On this sec-
tion of the line the oil would
flow by gravity and as a result
would save about 250,000
pounds a month in transporta-
tion cost.
