Another youngster, whose
holiday gifts once were com-

presents, as well.
There are many of us who
will be quick to say both fam-
ilies are hypocritical—that they
are neither completely Jewish
nor can they be called non-Jews.
They are trying to play both
ends against the middle.
Yet, for many-people today,
the transition to Hanukah is
still not natural. Young par-
ents, who learned about
Christmas by singing carols,
exchanging gifts hi a grabbag
and visiting Santa Claus when
they were youngsters them-
selves, don't find the change
easy.
Their feeling is that they
were not celebrating a religious
holiday but a joyous season of
the year, a time for gift giving,
merriment, pageantry and a
time proclaiming the lofty prin-
ciple of "peace on earth, good-
will to men." -
But as understanding has in-
creased along with religious ob-
servance in all denominations of
Judaism and Christianity, there
are things that become more
obvious:
1. That Christmas is one of
the holiest times of the year for

It is interesting to note the

four years ago, a Jewish family
as yet uninfluenced by the in-
creasing number of "Happy
Hanukah" signs in the windows

of their neighbors, displayed a
huge Christmas tree in the pic-
ture window.
When it came to the Christ-
mas following, the tree was
still there—only it was small-
er and off to the side . of the
room. Last year, the tree had
shrunk considerably more,
and was relegated to the din-
ing "L."
Now it is that there will be
no tree this season, and perhaps
next year there will be Hanukah
decorations. The family has
joined a congregation—for the
sake of the kinder, of course—

Protest 'Violation' of Graves
of Nazi Jewish Victims

DUSSELDORF, (JTA) — The
Central Council of Jews in Ger-
many has protested to the West
German government against the
unnecessary violation of Jewish
graves at concentration camp
cemeteries and expected dis-
s o l u t i o n of such cemeteries
which Bonn has pledged to
maintain.
The council charged that
many graves of Nazi victims
were opened unnecessarily and
religious regulations violated.
The Jewish organizations were
not consulted in advance of
these actions, the council said.

HANUKAH's ancient traditions, which are as inspiring today as
they were in the days of-the Maccabees, once again enhance our
observance of this great festival.

The Maccabean ideals continue to provide joy, on this
Hanukah, for young and old in Jewry. They always remind
us that the battle for justice and for a people's honor can
never be lost, as long as the people adhere to the principles
of human rights.

On this Hanukah, 5718, we send forth messages of cheer to our
kinsmen everywhere — in -this country, in Israel and throughout
the world. May the Maccabean valor live forever so that the
Hanukah triumph may result in peace and justice for Jewry and

for all mankind.

A HAPPY HANUKAH TO ALL
