There are many of us who will be quick to say both fam- ilies are hypocritical—that they are neither completely Jewish nor can they be called non-Jews. They are trying to play both ends against the middle. Yet, for many-people today, the transition to Hanukah is still not natural. Young par- ents, who learned about Christmas by singing carols, exchanging gifts hi a grabbag and visiting Santa Claus when they were youngsters them- selves, don't find the change easy. Their feeling is that they were not celebrating a religious holiday but a joyous season of the year, a time for gift giving, merriment, pageantry and a time proclaiming the lofty prin- ciple of "peace on earth, good- will to men." - But as understanding has in- creased along with religious ob- servance in all denominations of Judaism and Christianity, there are things that become more obvious: 1. SID SINGER HANUKAH's ancient traditions, which are as inspiring today as they were in the days of-the Maccabees, once again enhance our observance of this great festival. The Maccabean ideals continue to provide joy, on this Hanukah, for young and old in Jewry. They always remind us that the battle for justice and for a people's honor can never be lost, as long as the people adhere to the principles of human rights. On this Hanukah, 5718, we send forth messages of cheer to our kinsmen everywhere — in -this country, in Israel and throughout the world. May the Maccabean valor live forever so that the Hanukah triumph may result in peace and justice for Jewry and for all mankind.
