Religious Zionists Start Day School Campaign

ists of America, Mizrachi-Hapo-
el Hamizrachi, held last week
at the Hotel Roosevelt, N. Y.
Over 1,000 delegates from va-
rious parts of the country heard
Rabbi Isaac Stollman, president
•of the organization, describe the
successful growth of the Jew-
ish day school system, first ad-
vocated by
religious Zionist
movement, and its aim of cre-
ating schools combining religi-
ous and secular education in
50 additional communities dur-
ing the next five years.
To carry out this plan will
require $250,000, according to
Rabbi Stollman. Since 1939 the
organization's national educa-
tion commtitee has established
60 days schools throughout the
United States.
The organization, in cooper-
ation with the Torah and Cul-
ture Department of the Jewish
Agency, will soon open a Peda-
gogic Institute for in-service
training for teachers.

A five - year program for
maximum Jewish education in
the United States was an-
nounced at the first national
banquet of the Religious Zion-

If there is anything that is

nearly impossible to predict, it
is the emergence of a pitching
star in baseball. The injury to
Herb Score emphasizes this.
Herb had been called a million-
dollar property and indeed he
has been a remarkable pitcher.
Yet one hard-hit line drive
nearly blinded him and came
olose to ending his career.
So it is not at all sure that
Sandy Koufax, the Jewish
pitcher on the Brooklyn Dodg-
ers, will be a star, in spite of
his brilliant start this season.
Nevertheless, the left-hander
already has shown that with
luck he has the attributes to
make the grade in overwhelm-
ing style.

Sandy is 21, and he began
to pitch well in relief roles
early this year. When he was
given a chance to start, he
beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2,
limiting them to four hits.
Both runs were unearned.
Sandy fanned 13 Cubs, and
when a pitcher strikes them
out like that, he has more
than a prayer on the ball.

"The big thing with Sandy,"
Walter Alston., his manager, de-
clared, "has been the improve-
ment in his control. That has
been tremendous. Sandy has
always had great stuff. He
throws real hard and he has a
good curve."
Sandy attended Lincoln High
School in Brooklyn, where he
played first base. A man named
Milton Laurie suggested that
he try pitching in the Coney
Island sand lot league. But
Sandy liked basketball and
wanted to go to college. As a
matter of fact, he went to the
University of Cincinnati on a
hoop scholarship.
Still, he listened to Laurie
and started to pitch. He per-
formed in only 15 or 16 games
before the Dodgers offered him
a $14,000 bonus contract, and
he was on his way.

The American Jewish Con-
gress recently protested the
failure of some public schools
in Ne wJersey to recognize ab-
sences during the Shevuot holi-
day as "permissable for reli-
gious reasons."
Acting upon incidents occur-
ring in Jersey City public
schools, the AJCongress called
upon the State Commissioner
of Education to include Shev-
uot among those holidays for
which Jewish pupils may be
excused without penalty.
In a letter to Frederick Rau-
'binger, the State Commissioner
of Education, D. Beryl Mani-
schewitz, president of the New
Jersey Region of the AJCon-
gress, urged the commissioner
to issue urgent - instructions that
the children be excused from
any penalty
