Why Israel Is Unique

Ephraim Kishon, Israel's wit-
tiest journalist, the other day
gave 19 reasons why Israel is
the only country in which he
could live . . . Here goes:
1. It is the only country in
the world which is financed by
its taxpayers abroad .. .
2. It is a country so tiny that
there is no room to write its
name an the map of the
world . • •
3. It is a country of boundless
boundaries . . .
4. It is a country where moth-
ers learn the mother-tongue
from their children . . ,
5. It is a country where peo-
ple write Hebrew, read English
and speak Yiddish . .
6. It is a country where
everybody has the right to speak
his mind, but there is no law
forcing anybody to listen .. .
7. It is a country where you
can buy anything in the world
for your money—except an
apartment, which is expen-
sive .. .
8. It is a country where any
babe-in-arms may contradict his
father's political views . . .
9. It is a country of elections
but no alternatives . . .
10. It is a country which is
an organic part of its trade
unions . .
11. It is a country where a
slip of paper can move moun-
tains, but the mountains beget
speeches ...
12. It is a country where no-
body wants to work, so they
build a new town in three days'
time and go idle the rest of‘the
week
13. It is a country which pro-
duces less than it eats, and yet,
of all countries, nobody ever
died of hunger here ...
14. It is a country where no

one expects miracles, but every-
body takes them for granted ...
15. It is a country where one
calls ministers simply "Moishe"
—and then almost dies with the
excitement of it .
16. It is the only country in
the region whose political re-
gime is the bus-cooperative . . .
17. It is a country where
every human being is a soldier,
yet every soldier is a human
being .
18. It is a country that is nine
years old, but as clever and ex-
perienced as if it were, at least,
ten . . .
19. It is a country whose sur-
vival is permanently endan-
gered, yet its inhabitants' ul-
cers are caused by the neigh-
bors upstairs.

Zionism In Action

Rabbi Morton Berman, who
served 36 years in the Rabbi-
nate, is taking his family to Is-
rael where he will live perma-
nently . . Rabbi Berman is a
graduate of the late Stephen
Wise's Institute of Jewish Re-
ligion . .. For 20 years he was
the rabbi of the Isaiah Israel
Cong. in Chicago . . . During
these two decades he took an
intense interest in American
Jewish affairs, playing a leading
role in the anti-discrimination
movement . . .To his friends he
seemed so thoroughly immersed
in the American scene that his

decision to move to Israel came
as a big surprise . . . But Rabbi
Berman thinks it is quite logical
and simple ... He feels that his
children will lead a more inte-
grated life in Israel . . . Rabbi
Berman, we are told, will use
his knowledge of the American
Jewish scene for the best inter-
est of Israel . . . He will serve
as a consultant to the Jewish
Agency in Jerusalem on matters
dealing with relations between
Israel and American Jewry . . .
This is a field which can stand
much improvement.
