American Jewish Congress Opposes
Questions on Religion in 1960 Census

JERUSALEM—A minor cabi-
net crisis was averted Wednes-

NEW YORK — The American
Jewish Congress Tuesday voiced
day when the Knesset rejected its apposition to inclusion of
a motion to debate the status any question concerning reli-
of the Israeli Service, and gious affiliation or belief in the

agreed instead to a proposal
of Prime Minister David Ben
Gurion to refer the matter to a
Knesset committee for security
and foreign affairs.
A cabinet meeting Tuesday
night, convened to discuss long-
range development plans, quick-
ly became the forum of an argu-
ment over the Secret Service. A
numbr of opposition deputies
submitted proposals aimed at
establishing some form of par-
liamentary control over the
Secret Service, which is now
solely responsible to Ben-Gurion
as Minister of Defense.
Mrs. Go•da Meir, Israeli For-
eign Minister, assured the Knes-
set that the government re-
mained opposed to allowing sta-
tioning of United Nations Emer-
gency Force units on the Israeli
side of Arab-Israeli demarca-
tion lines.
Referring specifically to the
demilitarized zone at Nitzana,
Mrs. Meir said Israel would not
make any territorial conces-
sions for such UNEF demands.
Mrs. Meir made her statement
in answer to a question by Yigal
Alon, leader of the left wing,
Achdut Avodah, who said that
the Canadian and British For-
eign Ministers asked for sta-
tioning of UNEF on Israeli ter-
ritory. Mrs. Meir cited a decla
ration by Ben-Gurion that there
would be no further territorial
concessions as well as referring
to her previous public state-
ments.
