This coming week—the week
of ShevUot—will see the confir-
mation, consecration and gradu-
ation of thousands of Jewish
youngsters from religious and
. Sunday schools throughout the
country:
In our own community the
list of those receiving diplomas
from Jewish schools grows each
yea. -
The increasing attendance
of these young people at
schools where they learn the
history, traditions, customs,
holidays and the language of
our people is considered by
educators ts be an encourag-
ing sign for the perpetuation
of American Judaaism.
Yet, these same 'educators re-
, fuse to be lulled into the false
notion that school attendance
alone, or • even graduation; as-
sures future generations of Jews
in this country.

There is a growing school of
thbught amongst several ele-
ments of our local community
toward the day school move-
ment. Two such schools are
existent in our educational
structure today, while two
others are in the process of
being carried to fruition.
There are many arguments
that may be proposed both for
and against the day school idea:
Primarily, the reason for the
all-day, or 'parochial-type, school
is for more intensive Jewish
study.
Secondly, it would seek to
eliminate a sore spot which. has
troubled American Jews for the
past two generations: how can
a child be expected to - spend
the entire day in school and
then be forced to attend Cihed-
er?
_Since - the youngster would
receive his Jewish training
along with secular instruction
during regular school hours it
would. obviate the need for spe-
cial after-school classes, leaving
the time free for recreation or
music and dancing •lessons, etc.

Rabbis, educators and lay peo-
ple who are genuinely con-
cerned about the attractions
which tend to • lure Jewish
youngsters away from religious
instruction cite the day school
as the logical approach to Mod-
ern Jewish . education.
