brother of the deceased, Rabbi
Julius Fischer 'Of Beauford,

Born in Hungary, Jan. 26,
1879, Rabbi Fischer was de
scended from a long line of
_noted rabbis and leading schol-
ars. He , studied at numerous
yeShivoth, including Bacz Pappa
and Pressburg, where the re-
ceived serriicha•
He - came to this country in
1903,, after a Chicago congre-
gation wrote to leading rabbis
of Hungary to ask them to
recommend a young rabbi for
their pulpit.
After 20 years in Chicago,
Rabbi Fischer came here, as-
suming his post at Bnai Moshe.
He proceeded to build a small
congregation- into one of the
cortimunity'-s leading syn-
agogues.

Appeals Court Decision
Releasing Nazi Books
MUNICH, (JTA) —The Mu-
nich Chief prosecutor entered an
appeal against a verdict of the
district court revoking action
by a lower court for the con-
fiscation of five Nazi books pub--
lished by a firm operated by
Helmut Suendermann, former
deputy press chief in the Hitler
regime. The three members of
the court also rejected a prose-
cution demand to indict Suen.-

Was Detroiter 39 Years

Charles J. Laskey, owner of
the Laskey Cleaners, died May
20. He was born in Owosso,
Mich., andl had been a. Detroit
resident for 39 years.
Mr. Laskey,- who resided at
160 Hendrie, Royal Oak, was a
member of Cong. Shaar.ey Ze-
dek. He also was affiliated with
Harry. K eid an Lo dge, Bnai
Brith, Mosaic Lodge, F. &
and the Dry Cleaners Institute.
He leaves his wife, Florence;
two sons, Marshall and Jerry;
three daughters, Marlene, Gail
and Linda; his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. John Lebowsky; and two
sisters, Mrs. Reuben Kallman
and.,Mrs. Jack Schiff.

Israel Cabinet Allows
Visits by German Tourists

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A
seVeral-week-old decision by the
Israel Cabinet to admit or-
ganized parties of German
tourists to viSit Israel was re-
vealed by local newspapers .
Which reported that . the first
group was due to arrive in July.
When a tourist applieS for a
visa to enter Israel ,he must
present a certificate issued by
the Bonn gOvern'ment that he
tad not been an active Nazi.

Detroit Hotel Owner, Isadore Kowal, Dies

• Isadore Kowal, Detroit hotel
and apartment owner, died in
Miami Beach, Sunday, at the'
age of 63.
Co-owner of the Barlum and
full owner of the New Centre
Apartments, here, Kowal came
to this city about 40 years ago
as a penniless immigrant from
Russia. From a $1-an-hour job
in a sausage factory, he saved
enough money to purchase a
shoe repair shop.
Unable to repair shoes, he
hired skilled help. He began
three more shoe repair shops
here and then started a chain
of shops in Canada.
He later became owner of the
Chateau Frontenac, the Seward, -
the Belcrest and Barium Hotels.
Four years ago he purchased the
Manhattan Towers Hotel in New
York. At the time of his death
he also owned the Empress Ho-
, tel, in Miami Beach; Lord Nel-

Mazer's Widow Dies

NEW-'YORK, .(JTA) — Mrs.
Eva Mazer,- widow of Abraham
Mazer, rioted philanthropist,
died here at the age of 76. Like
other members of her family,
she was active in Jewish af-
fairs: She was a founder of the'
Albert Einstein College of
Medicine at Yeshiva Univer-
sity, a leader ins Hadassah and
other organizations.
