King Saud of Saudi Arabia.
In the letter, Reifkind said
that his organization will not
"in any way participate in this
welcome to one who, in our
judgment, is unworthy of being
a guest of the American people.
"To Americans of Jewish
faith," Reifkind wrote, "espe-
cially American veterans who
know at first hand that totali-
tarian • concepts breed death and
destruction, the name Saud Al-
Saud fills us with revulsion.
American servicemen of Jewish
faith, by decree of the absolute
government of this monarch, are
not allowed to serve as a part
of the American military force
on the Daharan Air Base in
Saudi Arabia, a base that is al-
legedly an integral part of
America's defense structure.
"No American of the Jewish
faith may enter Saudi Arabia.
Not only does Saudi Arabia
practice discrimination against
American Jews but, as well, we
should remember the recent
case of the Catholic Bishop who
was not permitted to enter
Saudi Arabia to minister to
American members of the mili-
tary forces at the Daharan base
until he had divested himself
of his clerical garb. I cannot
disregard the fact that this is
the only territory within the
membership of the United Na-
tions where human beings are
bought and sold."
"My action does not imply,"
Reifkind continued, "that I or
my organization have anything
but the deepest sympathy for
the people of Saudi Arabia who
are living in poverty, hunger
and disease while Saud receives
hundreds of millions of dollars
from American oil companies in
oil royalties. To our mind, Saud
and the feudal society which he
symbolizes are anachronisms
which do not deserve to be dig-
nified by a formal state recep-
tion such as the one planned."

Just as President Eisenhow-
er's did, the hand shown rest-
ing on this Bible is open to
the 32nd Psalm, verse 12. It is
the passage selected by the
President for the inaugura-
tion and it reads: "Blessed is
the nation whose God is the
Lord; the people whom he has
chosen for his inheritance."
The - Bible that was used
by the President was given
him by his mother, Ida Stower
Eisenhower, on his graduation
from West Point.
The prayer recited by Dr.
Louis Finkelstein, chancellor
of the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America, at the
inauguration, was based on a
selection from the second cen-
tury Babylonian s c hola r,
Abba Aricho, referred to in
the Talmud as Rab. The Rab
selection is used in the tradi-
tional New Moon — Rosh
Hodesh — prayer.
Dr. Finkelstein prayed for
"long life, life of peace, life
of happiness, above all life
which may prove a blessing
to mankind," for President
Eisenhower and Vice Presi-
dent Nixon.
Forty-three students in the
first class of Shapero School of
Nursing were honored at the
school's first capping exercises,
Tuesday evening. In a candle-
light ceremony in the Sinai Hos-
pital Auditorium, 42 w o m e n
nurses-in-training received new
starched white caps banded by
two sky-blue stripes. The male
member of the class was sign-
ally honored but, as other men
in the profession, did not don .
a cap.
George Stutz, chairman of the
Shapero School board, intro-
duced guest speakers and greet-
ed students, who marked the
transition from classroom in-
struction to training on hospi-
tal floors.
Nate S. Shapero, who with
his wife provided foundation
funds for the school, told stu-
dents that provision of fa-
cilities were "only the begin-
ning of t he school." H e
complimented t h e school's
board on "wise and dedicated
leadership" and charged the
claSs with responsibility for
further success of the school.
Dr. Julien Priver, director of
Sinai Hospital, conveyed well-
wishes from Max Osnos, presi-
dent of Sinai's board of trus-
tees, and pointed out that the
1957 class will enable Sinai to
reciprocate for the "one-way
traffic" of nurses provided by
other hospitals.
Mrs. Ruth B. Edelson, Shapero
School principal, and Miss Crys-
tal Halstead, Sinai's director of
nursing service, presented the
caps. Schol instructors Edna
Freeman and Mary Brebe • con-
ducted the candle-lighting rites.
Rabbi Morris Adler, in an
address, "Fulfillment Through
Service," s a I'd the ceremony
marked the beginning of "the
fulfillment of a dream," that
"the nurses' caps symbolize stu-
dents' interest in fellow men,
love of fellow men, "desire to
serve and the taking-on of re-
sponsibility.
Mrs. Royal Maas accompanied
the processional and recessional.
Following the program, the
school's social activities com-
mittee served refreshments in
the hospital cafeteria.
The Shapero School . of Nurs-
ing is the first practical institu-
tion supported by Detroit Jew-
ish Welfare Federation funds.
Non-sectarian, it is experi-
mental in educating nurses to
care for the acutely-ill.
Bar Mitzvah Again
Practiced by Reform
Synagogue in Macon
MACON, Ga. (JTA)—One of
the oldest Reform congregations
in the South, 97-year-old Temple
Beth Israel, has reintroduced the
Bar Mitzvah ceremony after a
50-year suspension of the rite.
In a formal statement, the
Macon congregation said that
"we believe the ceremony of
Bar Mitzvah affords the partici-
pant a profound religious ex-
perience and an indoctrination
unforgettable in his lifetime."
The statement expressed the
hope that "soon every boy in
our congregation upon reaching
the age of 13 will stand in our
sacred pulpit and conduct the
ritual."

needed capital
for Israel, will

Metropolitan
Opera soprano
Regina Resnik
will appear at
Miss Resnik the event. Miss
Resnick, who recently returned
from Europe where she per-
formed in the Bayreuth Festi-
val, has appeared in more Met-
ropolitan operas than any other
soprano, because of her ability
to perform diversified major
female parts.
Stage interiors at the event
will be designed by Wallace
Newton.
During the a'ternoon the 1956
Women's Division officers will
be honored and 1957 officers
will be introduced.
Women's Division Chairman
Mrs. Phillip Helfman quotes a
cable from. Levi Eshkol, Israel
Finance Minister, as impetus for
obtaining maximum attendance
at the affair. "The next few
weeks," wired Eshkol, "are go-
ing to be critical for Israel's
economic development. U.S. aid
has been temporarily suspended,
German reparations payments
are considerably reduced, immi-
gration pressures have greatly
increased, oil and power short-
ages are beginning to slow down
industry and unemployment is
increasing. This leaves Israel
Bonds as the most important
and only large scale source of
economic development funds."
Admission to the fashion show
is a 1957 bond purchase in any
amount or by sale of $300 in
Israel Bonds.
Mrs. Hellman also stated, "We
in the Detroit area are joining
with communities all over the
country in putting forth our
greatest effort in the next few
weeks in order that Israel's
present crisis will nat deter her
from maintaining her right to
take her place among the free
and contributing nations of the
world." She urged all women
who wish to volunteer services
to contact the Bond Office, 2290
David Stott Building, WO.
2-5091, or to attend report and
assignment meetings at her
home, mom Indiana, 10 a.m. to
12 noon, Jan. 31 and Feb. 11.
