NEW YORK (JTA) — The
board of directors of the Con-
ference on Jewish Material
Claims Against Germany, rep-
resenting 22 major Jewish or-
ganizations throughout the free
world, announced that 1,000,000
indemnification claims of vic-
tims of Nazi persecution in all
parts of the world are still
pending against the West Ger-
man government.
An allocation of $10,009,000
for 1957 to be used in programs
of relief, rehabilitation and cul-
tural and educational recon-
struction for the benefit of
150,000 surviving victims of
Nazism in 30 countries around
the world, was announced.
An aggregate of $7,500,000,
three-quarters of the allocations
for 1957, was granted by the
Conference for relief and re-
habilitation projects. The rest
was allocated for other pro-
grams including cultural and
educational reconstruction, and
legal aid in the prosecution of
restitution and indemnification
claims by needy Nazi victims.
More than 470 Jewish organ-
izations applied this year for
grants exceeding $30,000,000,
three times the aggregate of
the sums available for alloca-
tion.
The Conference, composed of
22 major Jewish organizations
throughout the free world ob-
tains the funds it allocates by
the terms of special agreements
it concluded with the German
Federal Republic and the gov-
ernment of Israel.
The Bonn - Israel reparations
agreement of 1952 calls for the
West German Government to
deliver to. Israel over a 12-year
span, goods and services valued
at" $822,000,000. The Conference
share of the overall sum runs
to $107,000,000.
The Conference, by formal
resolution, appealed directly to
Chancellor Konrad Adenauer of
the West German Republic to
speed up indemnification pay-
ments to Nazi victims by carry-
ing through a three-point pro-
gram. This step was taken at
the two-day meeting at Hotel
Roosevelt. The sessions were at-

Dr. Nahum Goldmann, presi-
dent of the Claims Conference,
pointed out that the wrongs for
which indemnification is due
arose under the Nazi regime
over 20 years ago. "The great
majority of Nazi victims, never-
theless, have failed, to this very
day, to receive the paythents
due them," Dr. Goldmann
stated.
The Conference resolution
urged the Bonn Government
to (1) Enlarge staffs at Ger-
man indemnification offices
to expedite the handling of
the million pending claims;
(2) Provide funds supple-
menting the sums earmarked
for payment in government
budgets, wherever the volume
of claims is greater than an-
ticipated; (3) Standardize and
simplify indemnification pro-
cedures to permit the uniform
and speedier treatment of
claims throughout the Ger-
man Federal Republic.
On the credit side • of the
ledger, Dr. Goldmann expressed
satisfaction with the implemen-
tation to date of the Bonn-
Israel reparations pact, to which
the Conference is a party. He
reported that a total of $273,-
809,000 in capital goods and

Hadassah Urges
U. S. Revoke Ban
on Israel Travel
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
United States was urged to re-
voke restrictions on travel to
Israel and other Middle East
countries, imposed when Israel
launched the Sinai campaign, in
a resolution adopted at the clos-
ing session of the Hadassah 'mid-
winter conference. The resolu-
tion to be sent to Secretary of
State John Foster Dulles, de-
clared that "the restraint on
travel by Americans to Israel is
an unreasonable burden on
American citizens and is con-
trary to the American tradition
of freedom of travel."
The Hadassah. conference
urged the United States to
"exert the maximum moral
pressure upon the government
of Egypt" to halt its "deliber-
ate policy" of anti-Jewish acts.
The resolution accused Egypt
of expulsion of Jews and con-
fiscation of Jewish property and
"calculated terrorization of de-
portees through the detention
of hostages."
Dr. Miriam Freund, Hadas-
sah president, announced that
Hadassah will seek to raise
$10,000,000 in 1957, $500,000
more than the 1956 goal.
Mrs. Herman Shulman, for-
mer Hadassah president, an-
nounced at a session that the
organization will conduct a
"pilgrimage to Israel" in June,
1958 to commemorate the tenth
anniversary of the establish-
ment of the Jewish State.
The Henrietta Szold Award
for Distinguished Humanitari-
an Service, which includes a
gift of $1,000, was presented
by Mrs. Shulman to Louis
Lipsky, honorary chairman of
the American Zionist Council.
Mr. Lipsky, in accepting the
award, denounced "the pecu-
liarly bizarre. incomprehen-
sible words and actions" of
the United States in dealing
with the Israel-Arab problem.
The delegates were told of
"v irulent anti - Semitism"
among Hungarian refugees now
in Austria by Zev Weiss, Youth
Aliyah executive member. As-
serting that "alarming numbers
of Hungarian refugees now in
Austria are anti-Semitic," Mr.
Weiss said that the problem
became so acute a few weeks
ago, "that the Austrian police
had to issue a warning that such
excesses against Jews would not
be tolerated."
by West Germany since repara-
tion payments started on June
30, 1953. Of this sum, $64,285,-
000 in goods and services were
received in 1956, and deliveries
this year are expected to run
at the same approximate rate.
The reparations agreements
signed in 1952 at Luxemburg
call for the German Federal
Republic to deliver to Israel,
over a 12-year span, goods and
services valued at $822,000,000.
The Conference is to receive
during this period a total of
$107,000,000 as its share of the
overall amount, to be used for
the relief and rehabilitation of
Nazi victims.
Dr. Goldmann disclosed that
major capital goods already de-
livered to Israel include ten dry
cargo motor ships, two passen-
ger and cargo liners, and one
oil tanker, aggregating 85,000
tons. Deliveries of Diesel loco-
motives, railroad cars, oil drill-
ing equipment as well as pipes
and casinf and telecommunica-
tion equipment are playing a
significant role in the growth of
the Israeli economy. Deliveries
scheduled for the current year
are expected to include a pas-
senger vessel of 10,000 tons, and
three dry cargo motor ships of
12,750 tons each.
