MRS. JACK A. HORVVITZ

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Allen Hor-
witz have returned from their
honeymoon to Mexico, and are
now residing on Monte Vista
Ave.
Before her wedding on Oct.
21, at Cong. Shaarey Zedek,
Mrs. Horwitz was Judith Can-
tor, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Martin Cantor, of Bangor,
Me.
Mr. Horwitz is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Horwitz, of this
city. Rabbi Morris Adler offi-
ciated at the ceremony, which
was followed by a reception.
The bride's gown of white
Italian taffeta was fashioned
with long pointed sleeves, a
fitted basque and bouffant skirt
which ended in a short sweep
train.
Her chapel-length veil of il-
lusion was caught to a Tudor
cap of reembroidered Alencon
lace studded with pearl and
crystal beads matched the lace
trimming on the Sabrina neck-
line and hipline of the gown.
She carried a spray of phaelan-
opsis, orchids and lilies-of-the-
valley On a mother - of - pearl
Bible.
Mrs. Gregory M. Schmitt, of
Schenectady, N. Y., was her
sister's matron of honor, and
Arline Popper, of St. Louis, Mo.,
was maid of honor.
Bridesmaids w e r e Francine
Kamen, cousin of the bride-
groom, Mrs. Sheldon Goldman,
Barbara Ettinger and Sharon
Slobin, all of Detroit.
Paul Goodman was the bride-
groom's best man, and ushers
were Maxwell Schwartz and
Robert Schwartz, his cousins,
Herbert Gardner, Earl Fuller
and Sheldon Goldman. -

Leaders of a score of ,civic
and Jewish community move-
ments joined this week in greet-
ing Melville S. Welt on his 75th
birthday.
Over 75 friends tendered him
a luncheon on Tuesday, at the
Great Lakes Club, and in the
evening there was open house
at the family home, 1884 Bal-
moral.
Mr. Welt, who is now presi-
dent of North End Clinic, is
active in plans for the construc-
tion of an out-patient clinic at
Sinai Hospital, as a new clinic.
He continues his activites as
a member of ithe board of the
Jewish Welfare Federation, as
an active participant and board
member of the Red Cross,
United Foundation and numer-
ous other movements..
Born Nov. 13, 1861, in Indiana,
Mr. Welt came to Detroit with
his family at the age of 10 and
has resided here since that time.
After graduating from the
University of Michigan, he en-
tered his father's business, Welt
and Sons Paper Co., of which
he is now president. The firm
was founded in 1891:

in his career, and for 20 years
served on the executive com-
mittees of the Greater Detroit
Hospital Fund.
Mr. Welt was president of
Temple Beth El for five years,
and for many years served as
a board member of the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega-
tions. He was the second presi-
dent of Franklin Hills Country
Club, serving in the - post for
five years.
He is married to the former
Belle Oberfelder, the sister of
the late Mrs. Leo Franklin,
widow of Dr. Franklin. The
Welts' children are Mr. and
Mrs. Vernon Pope and Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Smith. They have
four grandchildren.

Beth Yehudah are planning an
organizational meeting for a
Parent Teachers Association at
8:30 p.m., Tuesday, at North-
west Israel Synagogue.
Richard Merrick, who will be
principal of the new Waldo E.
Lessenger School in Oak Park,
v rill speak on "Why a Hebrew
School PTA."

A short business meeting will
be followed by a social hour.

Norman's Torch Drive Contest

Normans, Jewish, Comm_unity
Center boys' club, held a popu-
larity contest to raise money for
the Torch Drive. Cups with the
names of clubs had been set
up at the Berman Branch. Votes
were cast by dropping money
in individual cups. .
Billy Shell was chairman of
the contest.
