Horatio Alger is not dead in
America—not by a long shot.
That he is alive and very de-
cidedly kicking was proven con-
clusively by President Eisen-
hower, who, contrary to his
party, swept the nation in one
of the most decisive triumphs
of an individual candidate in
U. S. history.
The Horatio Alger story of
rags to riches is exemplified by
the President, whose star rose
from humble farm beginnings
to the most exalted position of
leadership in the country.
The hero worship attached
to the Eisenhower name is
hardly paralleled in American
presidential history. While
the President won by a re-
sounding plurality in the pop-
ular vote and swept all but a
few electoral votes, the Re-
publican Party lost in total
Senate • and House seats.
So, the American people, on
the morning after the election
faced the prospect of a Repub-
lican President and a Demo-
cratic Congress, an indication of
creeping progress • and conserva-
tism for the next four years.
On the suburban scene at
home, the hotly - contended
Huntington Woods election
boiled down to an easy win for
incumbent Mayor David R. Cal-
houn. who was elected to a
third term.
Louis J. Gordon, the unsuc-
cessful candidate who opposed
Mayor Calhoun, even before the
vote, had expressed doubt that
he would win, but said that by
waging a vigorous campaign he
hoped at least ...to stir the city
out of its lethargy in promoting
