Betrothal Told

Following .r e c e n t meetings
conducted by the Detroit Coun-
cil of Pioneer Women, under
the chairmanship of Mrs. Har-
old Noveck, vice - president of
education, a number of program
aids have been made available
to local groups during the com-
ing season.
One project, announced by
Mrs. David Sislin, c u l t u r al
chairman, is the establishment
of a speakers bureau with a
listing of local speakers avail-
able to member chapters.
In this connection-, resource
material will be gathered and
catalogued and - a programming .
workshop established for the
exchange of ideas on program.
This is directed by Gloria Lif-
shay, cultural co-chairman, who
will be librarian of the source
material.
Elsie Harold was named tem-
porary chairman of a Council-
sponsored study group.
Under Council membership
chairman, Bea Shulman, mem-
bership teas are being arranged
by all chapters for September.
The theme of "Big Sister" will
be used for the membership
drive.
A highlight of the campaign
will be a contest for those
bringing in five or more new
members. The winner will be
given a trip to Israel. Other
prizes also will be awarded.
Women interested in joining
new groups in Northwest De-
troit, the suburban area or other
chapters should call Mrs. Shul-
man, TO. 5-2629, or Mrs. Frank

Munich Community Inducts
Dr. A. Kraus as Rabbi

MUNICH, (JTA)—Dr. Adoni-
yahu Kraus was inducted as
Rabbi of Munich, a post which
has been open for several years.
Dr. Kraus, who is on leave
from a post with the Israel
Ministry of Religion, is a native
of Burgenland, an Austrian
province adjoining Hungary.
From his arrival in Germany

Yiddish-Speaking Jewry
Declines in Cana&

MONTREAL, (WJA) — The
percentage of the Jewish popu-
lation claiming Yiddish as its
mother tongue in Montreal has
dropped from 96.9 per *cent in
1921 (when the question of
mother tongue was first intro-
duced into the Canadian census)
to 53.5 per cent in 1951. This
is disclosed in a population
study of the Canadian Jewish
Congress.
In Toronto, 97.8 per cent of
all Jews claimed Yiddish as
their mother tongue in 1921 as
against 51.3 per cent in 1951.
The relative figures for Win-
nipeg were 98.8 per cent in 1921
as against 66, per cent in 1951.
The percentage of the Jewish
population of Montreal able to
speak English increased from
93.7 per cent in 1921 to 97.9 per
cent in 1941 and decreased to
94.1 per cent in 1951, due to the
influx of immigrants during the
post-war period.
The percentage of the Jewish
population able to speak both
official languages, English and
French, increased from 28.8 per
cent in 1921 to 32.1 per cent
in 1951.
