He has just completed his

Susan Strasberg and
Her Able Successor,
Israeli Dina Deron

In his popular column The
Lyons Den in the New York
Post, Leonard Lyons relates the
following about the stars in
"Diary of Anne Frank”:
DEBUT: Susan Strasberg,
co-star of "Dairy of Anne
Frank," flew to England this
week for a holiday. In Lon-
don she will meet Otto Frank,
father of the girl Susan por-
trayed on Broadway. Susan's
role in the show was assigned
to her understudy, Dina De-
ron, an Israeli who, until a
few months ago, had no
knowledge of the English
language.
As soon as Dina learned that
the role would be hers, she
wrote to her mother in Israel.
Monday was the day of the
debut, and on Monday after-
noon her mother flew to N. Y.
unannounced and with only $10.
She checked into a hotel where
she once had stayed, borrowed
$10—then went to the theater
and bought a ticket. It was a
third row seat, and she feared
that if Dina caught a glimpse of
her it might upset the child's
performance.-
Her mother therefore fled
to the rear of the balcony and
from that perch, high in a
Broadway theater, the woman
who'd just arrived from Israel
watched her daughter's offi-
cial debut in a co-starring
role opposite Joseph Schild-
kraut.
She decided that if she went
backstage the reunion would be
too emotional—such a surprise
so soon after such a dramatic
experience as a New York de-
but. She left the theater, and
was herself surprised—meeting
her son, who is studying elec-
tronics here. He, too, had come
to the theater unannounced.
They agreed that the reunion
would be best in private. They
therefore went to Dina's small
apartment and waited until the
girl came home, to let the young
actress know that the family
had been there in her moment
of glory.
