Israel Trade Show Sells
Detroiters on Israel Wares

The Israel Trade Show, which
concluded Thursday after a
four - day exhibition at' the
Sheraton-Cadillac Hotel, served
a variety of purposes.
For those who had already
been to Israel, it was a re-
fresher course in the accomp-
lishments of the new Jewish
state, although many tourists
of a few years back commented
on the progress made since
their visits.
The uninitiated in Israel
tourism .were stunned by the
multitude of commodities avail-
able for export and the Wester-
nization of the products, corn-
plete with the commercialism
we in America have come to
know so well.
Most important, however,
was the major purpose of
the exhibition: to secure
agents for Israel firms in
Detroit and to sell merchan-
dise to local buyers.
The latter point, according
to Dr. E. Justice Dayan, who
heads the Israel Trade Show,
is being achieved — from
books and Bibles to fashions
and foodstuffs.
Dr. Dayan, who resides in
TeX Aviv when he is not travel-
pointed out, and therefore, to
inspire exports, must also im-
port. He paid tribute to "the
oldest and youngest republic
in history—Israel."
He pointed out that as
against exports of $17,000,000
to this country, Israel imports
more than $90,000,000 worth
of goods from the U. S., and
urged greater stimulus of trade
with Israel and an increase of
imports from the Jewish State
as an encouragement to the
Israelis.
Israel products which have
caught on considerably in this
country are women's fashions,
particularly s we at e r s and
women's suits;, rainwear (about
l'7 per cent of U.S. raincoat
buyers wear Israeli rainwear);
cement, marble and plywood.
Many of the women who at-
tended the Israel Trade Show
commented on the smart styles
offered by the Israel fashion
industry, which has concen-
trated on sweaters, knit dresses
and two-piece and three-piece
knit suits.

and a lecture on Jewish life
behind the Iron Curtain, will
be given by Samuel L. Shnei-
derman, • author and journalist,
Saturday, June 30, 8:30 p.m., in
the Morris L. Schaver Auditor-
ium of the Labor Zionist In-
stitute, under auspices of the
City Committee of the Farband
Labor Zionist Order and the co-
sponsorship of the Yiddish cul-
ture committee of the Jewish
Community Council. The entire
community is invited.
Shneiderman, for the - first
time in Detroit since his recent
return from an extensive stay
in Poland, will discuss the ques-
tion whether there has been
any real change for Jews since
the death of Stalin.
For the first time that eve-
ning, a free world audience will
be able to see unusual films of
Jewish life under communism.
Among the documentaries will
be a film taken of the Warsaw
Ghetto Uprising and movies of
historic places that used to be
centers of Jewish life and crea-
tive activities — Cracow, Lodz,
and Lublin, among others.
