Judah Eisenstein, the r trst
, .
and Greatest Anthologist
The Jewish Book Council, at
its annual meeting just held,
quite appropriately presented
its annual award to Louis M.
Rabinowitz "in recognition of
his generous and discriminat-
ing devotion to Jewish litera-
ture."
Among all the notable large
contributors to the major Jew-
ish causes and other leading
philanthropists, Mr. Rabinowitz
stands out permanently as the
Jewish Maecaenas of modern
times and the outstanding pa-
tron of Jewish scholarship and
literature. The Yale Hebrew
Classics alone will, among the
other endowments, serve as a
perpetual memorial to his devo-
tion to Jewish learning and
learning and letters.
I may take a certain pride
in the munificent gifts which
Mr. Rabinowitz has bestowed
upon the cause of Hebraic
culture, because I worked
with him many years ago
when he first took part in
the work of the American
-Jewish Congress and the ac-
tivities of the New York
branch of the Congress which
was called the Jewish Council
of Greater New York, and of
which he served as treasurer.
Mr. Rabinowitz's contribu-
tions to the advancement of
Jewish scholarship and litera-
ture are carried on in the tra-
dition of a number of distin-
guished forerunners and pio-
neers in the field. Some of
these men both financed under-
takings and themselves pur-
sued the craft of research and
literary creativeness.
Above all, Mr. Rabinowitz
follows, perhaps unconsciously,
the example of a great path-
finder in the advancement of
Jewish scholarship and litera-

ture, Dr. Judah David Eisen-_
stein who recently passed away
at the age of 102. Dr. Eisenstein
established a precedent which
may never be emulated but will
ever after remain a source of
pride and inspiration to all
those who have at heart the
preservation of Jewish identity -
and the teachings of Judaism.
Judah David Eisenstein
wrote and compiled some '70
volumes and his books consti-
tute a little library in them-
selves of great treasures of
Jewish law and learning. He
loved to think of the great
body of Jewish teachings and
commentaries as treasurers of
our spiritual values and hence
the titles of his remarkable
ten-volume Hebrew Encyclo-
pedia, "Eizar Yisroel."
Then come "Eizer Midrasim,"
"Eizer Meseis," "Eizer Viku-
chem" and among others "Eizer
Zichronoth" which is his auto-
biography, chronicling not only
an eventful and venturous life,
but also a wonderful era of the
arrival here of the first scholar-
ly and intellectual immigrants
who attempted to lay the foun-
dations of a unified community.
Eisenstein was not only a
writer but he was also an or-
ganizer, a promoter, a traveller,
a pioneer Zionist-in fact, the
unequalled intellectual pioneer
coming here from Eastern
Europe.
Nominally, J.D.E. retired at
the age of 40 from the shirt
manufacturing business on East
Broadway, founded by his
mother, but actually he con-
tinued to be interested in
various practical affairs, in-
cluding some ventures in real
estate. The management of his
publications alone required, in
addition to immense energy,
some practical knowledge and
experience.

"Mosky" Yalowitz .was a good
friend of the people who lived
in the vicinity of his store here.
A bachelor, and the last of his
family, "Mosky" never appeared
to have any special communal
interest.
When he died, in 1954, people
made occasional references to
him. Then, last week, it was
reported in "The Southern
Israelite" here, that "Mosky"
did have some communal in-
terests after all.
Without having said a word
to anyone about it, "Mosky" had
left almost his entire estate,
$5,43'7, to the Jewish Home for
the Aged. They're going to put
up a plaque at the home dedi-
cated to "Mosky" and his par-
ents.

"Such worship can be : mean-

a movement. We pray that jus-
